Toddler Screaming with Excitement

Please can anyone advise, when my 2 year old gets excited they scream loudly, today at a baby group they were excited that their daddy turned up and ran over to them screaming some other mums were tutting and upset that their screaming was loud. I took my little one aside to explain that we should use indoor quiet voices and instead of screaming we could say yay in a quieter voice. I tried to explain that its okay to be excited but sometimes screaming upsets others. Im struggling with how to manage the screaming when they are excited and am aware that generally they are a lot louder when excited that other children.

Tutting at a two year old!! How mean. Ignore them.

verycloakanddaggers · 07/11/2025 15:39

Ignore the other mums, just keep working on explaining the alternative. She'll grow out of it.

He or she is 2 so unlikely to understand explaining about inside voices. I would just try to distract him/her and not worry about what other people think. There’s a chance that the other Mums were not that upset and that you just felt they were because you are on edge about this. Honestly, its a non issue

Not sure why anyone was tutting or concerned in that context but also you are right to address it. Just keep talking about appropriate behaviour in public and eventually your child will understand it, it’s just their personality that they react that way, and they are far too young to get it yet

2 yo now tells my husband to use their inside voice when they cheer at the football 🤣

Other people 'tutting' is not the end of the world so don't create unnecessary stress for yourself worrying about what other people think. Focus on supporting your child and what they need.

A two year screaming in delight??

Yeah, total problem

paddyclampster · 07/11/2025 18:03

In a child care setting it wouldn’t bother me, in a restaurant / on a train it would!

I’d be telling them not to screech (if that’s what they’re doing).

That said, other mums of all people shouldn’t be judging and tutting, we should be supporting each other.

Who goes to a baby group then moans and tuts at a toddler screaming. Honestly I would do precisely nothing. It’s normal.

Usernamenotav · 07/11/2025 18:25

You don't need to anything other than ignore everyone else.
Let's not teach our kids to change themselves to please others. There is nothing wrong with a 2 year old screaming with excitement. Let him be

BeaLola · 07/11/2025 18:32

How lovely that he was so excited to see his/her Daddy.

The others were just put out that there partners:husbands weren't there

SnappyPeachSeal · 07/11/2025 20:43

It’s totally normal. My two year old does that when she’s really excited eg at her recent birthday party she and all of her little friends would scream and screech with excitement. If it gets too much one thing I do to distract them is get them to make ‘ssssh’ sounds like a snake etc! But apart from that it’s ridiculous the other mums were annoyed!

Phoenixfire1988 · 09/11/2025 22:43

If i was there id honestly smile seeing them so happy to see daddy . In a restaurant not so much but as long as they aren't screeching for an extended time its not a big deal overall just try to teach them to use their 'indoor' voice .
Tbf I've been out in pubs and there's full grown adult woman screeching when they spot someone they haven't seen in a while so a 2 yo should be no problem 😅🤣
