11 month old - day 5 and not eating or drinking

My 11 month old has completely gone off her food and drink.
shes been unwell since Saturday but completely gone off her food and drink. She doesn’t want anything in her mouth as I think she’s fed up of the countless syringes of medication I’ve been giving.
ive been giving calpol and nurofen since Saturday. Then antibiotics since Monday. A&E prescribed Diflam spray yesterday. I’m not sure what to do as she still won’t drink anything? I’ve resorted to syringing her some milk as I’m so worried she will become dehydrated. How long is she going to be sick for ? It feels like forever. I am back at work next week too.

How is she unwell OP? Fever/flu symptoms? What’s her temperature like?

Hoe much milk is she getting through syringes?

I’d write down exactly what she’s had over the last 5 days and call GP or 111 for advice. Failing that I’d go to A&E if you think she’s dehydrated.

What would be her very favourite food? Ambrosia do tiny custard mini pots, very easy to eat for babies with sore teeth and mouths (and a nice mild flavour).

You can give Diarolyte at that age for rehydration, a few sips at a time.

Is she still having wet nappies? Make a note of how often. I might phone 111 for advice.

Doctor if not drinking

Donotgogentle · 05/11/2025 11:10

I wouldn’t worry about the food but doctor/111 if not drinking. As pp said, are nappies wet?

ScaryM0nster · 05/11/2025 11:14

Output is the key bit to monitor.

If not getting wet nappies then that needs fairly urgent attention.

Ice lollies might be worth a try.

Hollyhobbi · 05/11/2025 11:15

5 days is a long time without drinking in an infant. When was her last wet nappy?

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/11/2025 11:46

Have you tried water based ice lollies ? They rehydrate, but slowly so not to cause stomach upset. Most little ones think they're a treat too.

A doctor once showed me a trick to check hydration in babies and children. Pinch the skin on the back of DC hand. If the skin stays raised after the pinch then they are dehydrated.

bananasinabowl · 05/11/2025 11:55

She still having wet nappies. I’ve managed her to drink 5oz of milk whilst she’s been sleeping.

When will this end 😭. I feel like it’s never going to end.

I’d call the doctors and book a telephone app - if she is drinking something that’s positive

For next time, paracetamol suppositories are a million times easier for a sick baby who won't cooperate

ttccd21 · 05/11/2025 14:02

Antibiotics will kick in soon. My little one just went 9 days living only off milk at nap/bedtimes and small amounts of fromage frais 😢

Terrifying but all you can do is keep trying and monitoring output and talk to a&e if no wet nappies in 8-12 hours

mcdonalds milkshakes seemed to be the one thing mine would tolerate - worth a try x

How old is your Dc? And did they start drinking and eating again like normal?

How would I give that to a 11 month old?

Suppositories go up the bottom. I hope she perks up soon, they do tend to bounce back quite quickly!

When you change a nappy, you just pop one in. They don't even notice! No more spitting calpol and trying to guess if they swallowed any. Seriously, it sounds weird, but it's s game changer. They're much faster absorbed too

bananasinabowl · 05/11/2025 20:47

Oh I never heard of them. Where do I buy them? And safe for babies ??

Paaseitjes · 06/11/2025 21:13

These ones are really expensive, but this is the sort of thing. You'll be better asking at your chemist. Ones for 3-12 months definitely exist, but I don't know how easy they are to find. For babies, you need 120mg suppositories, so these will be fine even though it says from 1y.
