Vaccines - has this happened to you?

Hello,

my baby had her 8 week vaccines last Friday and we ended up in a&e and staying the night. She had a few spells of not breathing (breath holding of up to 12 seconds). I wasn’t sure if it was possibly the calpol making her drowsy or a reaction to the vaccine. Long story short apprentley breath holding is normal to a pain response and my baby was stressed from it causing the irregular breathing. It was so scary. Her monitoring overnight was perfect. I’m terrified to get the next two vaccines but I will as it protects her.

just wondering if anybody has ever experienced this before? I’m also high on anxiety about SIDS too.

DD2 did this as a baby. Terrified the practice nurse when she got her vaccines.

Did she do it with every vaccine she got? Did you just let it pass or took her in hospital? X

All of them including the pre school ones at 3 yrs old. She just immediately held her breath and then started crying. I didn’t see the need to take her to hospital and neither did the nurse suggest it. She would often hold her breath before crying when very little.

Obviously they don't say this because it's not the schedule, but they really don't mind if you delay a bit. It happens all the time if they haven't got a nurse available etc. You might feel more comfortable to have the next ones at 16 and 20 weeks instead of 12 and 16. They do just get a bit more robust after 12 weeks and it's less of a fright for you.

The issue with posting this question is if anyone says anything g negative about vaccines the comment will only be deleted, myself and many others have seen this time and time again on mumsnet so I’m afraid you’ll only get pro vaccines and encouragement for them, despite so people also going through side effects from them.

Please make an appointment with your GP or practice nurse to discuss your worries. They'll be able to advise if there's anything you need to look out for and hopefully reassure you. They can also talk about timing and whether it is more or less risky to delay or continue on schedule.

In terms of SIDS, SIDS rates are actually lower in babies who are vaccinated. I found that reassuring since a lot of the antivax stuff makes vague claims about SIDS which scared me when DS1 was little, but the evidence shows the opposite.

When my DCs have had a mild reaction to a vaccine e.g. a temperature, it's normally only happened with one of the two or three doses that they have, so don't panic that having a reaction this time means she'll react to all of them.

Speak to your practice nurse and ask for advice. My daughter had a reaction to her 4 months jabs and had to be seen in paeds as she was completely inconsolable. For her 1 year jabs the practice nurse didn't feel comfortable giving them to her so referred us to the hospital. She had the 4 1 year jabs over 3 appointments under the paediatrician with 48h access to paeds without going through a and e after each vaccine. We found out this way that she doesn't respond well to the menB and it makes her feel particularly shitty

My DD did this with her toddler injections, the nurses didn’t raise any concerns but it was a morning moment for me!
