Potty training - will I fail?

Oh day 2 of potty training my new 3 yo boy. Two failed prior attempts at 2.5 and 2.8m.

signs I think he’s ready

  • clearly states pees & poops go in potty
  • is excited by big boy pants and doesn’t want his nappy back
  • can follow instructions
  • isn’t scared of potty or toilet
  • nappy can stay dry for a prolonged period
  • knows when he has pooped and asks to be changed and goes in to another room to poo
  • pees in the bath and says he’s peeing
  • can pee when on potty

day 1 we got 80% pees on potty and both poops. Both poops I saw him make the poop face and put him on, second poop I popped him on after dinner as he always poops after dinner.

for pees we are putting him on perhaps hourly.

my friend says it will fail because he isn’t actively asking to pee. And he won’t really be trained and will have lots of accidents when he goes to nursery on Tuesday.

thoughts??

My little boy wasn't asking to use the potty when I started potty training him. One day, I just put him on it and away he went! He had multiple accidents in the first few days, but that is normal because they're not used to having to listen to their body signals r.e peeing and pooping yet. Obviously with a nappy, they'll just go when they need to go.

My son is 7 now and only occasionally has accidents when he's poorly or really overwhelmed.

In my opinion, kids don't need to be asking to use the potty to be ready to use it.

I would absolutely get on and do it now. And not have potential failure in the back of my mind. He sounds very ready and don’t want to leave it too long.

There will be accidents initially, that’s part of the learning.

I’d have a think about how you are going to do it. We did Oh Crap.

I’d have a chat to nursery about their approach/how they’d support in the early days. It would be ideal to have a run of a few days at home before nursery. Have you a long weekend option coming up?

he will Have had sat sun and mon at home training before nursery on Tues and we currently have him in pants no trousers.
we have the oh crap book but a long period with nothing on doesn’t work with nursery hence the pants.
we had 2 pee accidents yday and none today and no poop accidents this far

No it won't fail if you don't give up. My DD we did at 2 years 9 months. She was a dream. Think we had one tiny dribble not on a potty. Came to DS and started him at 2 years 6 months to coincide with warm weather to dry clothes quickly and be bare bum comfortably. Day one we caught absolutely nothing. Not a drop. My family were busy saying give up, he's not ready. Day 2 started out the same way. Around lunchtime, he asked for the potty and weed in it. Big praise and a chocolate button. Once he did it once, I knew he could so no giving up! We've had accidents of course and he is still in a pull up overnight but uses potty all day with no bother. Stick to your guns and believe in your boy!

So today we caught all but one pee in the potty and a poop.
we prompt him for pees every 1.5-2hrs if he hasn’t taken himself (he’s asked to go a few times) and he usually pees.
for poops we are still at the stage where I pop him on at intervals, usually after meals, and today I caught him making a poop face and swiftly popped him on the potty

First day at nursery, sent him in pants plus lots of spares.
he had one small pee accident.
I think that’s quite good?
nursery have been really good though

That's really good, at nursery there are nomads of things that distract them so only 1 accident is amazing.
Along with lots of spare clothes, its also useful to send a spare pair of shoes if you have them as they can often get wet with accidents (especially if he waits until the last minute to go and doesn't make it in time.)

Ok so seems like he is trained!
No accidents for the last few days and fully asking when he has to pee or poop!

tunnocks tea cakes worked a treat for getting poops in the right place 🤣
