At my wits end - nappy soaked and leaking by the morning!

Any tips from anyone who’s experienced this? My 21 month DS reliably sleeps 10-11 hours overnight and more and more we are finding he wakes in the morning having leaked wee all over his clothes and sleeping bag. Thankfully it doesn’t seem to upset him, but the endless washing every day is ridiculous and it’s not nice for him, obviously!

I’m at my wits end! We’ve tried several brands/sizes - we’ve tried size 5 pampers premium, pull ups, size 6 pampers baby dry, I’ve started using Peachies size 5 as I felt they fitted better around DS middle and a better shape for him overall but we’ve even had leaks with them now. I think he’s about 11kg so around size 5 generally.

The nappies are full to bursting and so heavy so I think it’s the volume of liquid rather than the nappy not fitting properly?

We have no leaks in the day so I’m not concerned he wees too much or anything like that. He has a normal amount of water/cup of milk with dinner, occasionally drinks bath water (!) and has about a 30 second breastfeed before bed and a few sips of his water beaker. I don’t know if he’s drinking too much before bed? I don’t really want to restrict his water intake though as I’d be worried he’d be thirsty overnight.

any advice welcome!

We use cloth nappies all the time but for our DS this age we've just started finding he leaks through so we're adding in an extra booster for night time

Ours wears a size 4 plus with a size six pull up on top, solved the problem

For DC2 and DC3, I started sitting mine on the toilet before putting them in the bath / in their pyjamas from about 18 months. Even if they aren't anywhere near ready to potty train (DC3 was over 3 for potty training) mine both rapidly learned to wee in the toilet.

I originally did it just because DC2 wanted to sit on the toilet to copy DC1 (who was then potty training), but it worked so well I did it with DC3. It might be worth a go?

I used to buy nappy liners which were sold to go with cloth nappies and pop one of those into the disposable ones I used. I’m assuming the liners were padded and had no plastic backing for them to have worked. A long time ago now but it would make sense that they still sold them. I had to order from Boots as they weren’t available locally.

drspouse · 02/11/2025 17:47

The liners for cloth nappies aren't that absorbent I'm afraid. You must have got lucky, at least if it's the disposable ones. They are mainly used to catch solid poo so you can shake it off down the loo before washing.

Superscientist · 02/11/2025 17:58

I'd first look at time he's drinking. My daughter is a fiend for not drinking during the day but come 5 pm she'll drink. She's 5 and still in nappies overnight. We are trying to encourage more drinking, and weeing during the day.
She's obviously potty trained now so we do wee before getting her ready for bed, stories, last drink and then a wee before getting into bed. She's has a heavy wet nappy the next day.
She was in cloth when she was 2 and when we were in a pinch and didn't have any boosters dry i would some times add a cloth wipe to her nappy as an extra absorbent layer.
I think either you need to add something to the nappy to boost absorbance or add a nappy cover to protect from leaks, possibly both.
I'd look at how well the nappy is staying in place overnight. My daughter still has poppered vests overnight and that helps keep the nappy in position and the pants stay better than the tabbed nappies. We find she leaks more if she has fidgeted. We had a few leaks last week when she had a nettle sting on her bum cheek and she kept giving herself a wedgy.

Do you mean boosters? Ours are hemp and are magnificently absorbent. I’d use liners to describe the thin fleece ones that go on top of the hemp. They’re just used as a stay dry layer and aren’t absorbent.

Yes they were absorbent pads but were disposable.

In case anyone is reading this thread - miraculously sizing up to size 6 (size 5 in the day) specifically Pampers Baby Dry has solved the issue!

Glad it’s sorted, just wanted to say in case you find yourself in a similar situation again that my son was the same and potty training solved the issue for us. Miraculously he’s never wet the bed since!

PurpleFlower1983 · 04/01/2026 07:36

Double up the nappies and make sure he has a wee in the toilet before you go to bed. Sounds like it’s time for toilet training.

Just read your update! Glad it’s sorted!

LouiseTopaz · 04/01/2026 07:41

My son is the same age and we use the Sainsbury's own brand 6 plus, they never leak. Pampers, Aldi, Tesco, always leak from us.

10 to 11 hours sleeping is way to long for any nappy to cope. He's going to have to be changed during that time. I had to get my DS up to be changed or pottied during that time. He was also a good sleeper.

I disagree. Our child can reliably sleep 12-13 hours a night, and the nappy can sometimes have been changed up to an hour before bedtime, and we've never had a leak when using Pampers pants. Normal nappies, definitely, but pants, no.

If OP hasn't switched to pants yet, maybe try that.

Also size 5 for a 21 month old seems small maybe?

Ah ha I had already posted before seeing your reply! I thought sizing might be an issue. Our son is nearly ready for size 5 and isn't even a year old yet. We've found the nappy size guidelines to be relatively useless in terms of weight as babies have different body sizes and that's more important for nappy fit than weight.

ForWorthyAquaPoet · 04/01/2026 08:35

Do you think there is a difference between pull ups and nappies? We’re using pull ups and having so many leaks

Good its sorted, I found my dc leaked when they started holding their wee more overnight and letting it all go first thing in the morning all at once. No nappy could cope with the niagra falls of that 😅

FuckingShitShow · 04/01/2026 10:11

Glad you found a solution. Sizing up a vest worked for me in the past.

Yes definitely - we went back to normal taped nappies and I think this has helped!

Also a few replies re potting training - we aren’t ready for that yet, he doesn’t communicate any need to go and rarely tells me if he’s done a poo in his nappy. Fleetingly interested in the potty! I am planning to try in the spring when the weather gets warmer!

Just chang his nappy when you go to bed or middle of the night. If he's a heavy sleeper he will likely just stay asleep.
