Tummy time

Hi,

My 3-month old doesn't lift his head at all during tummy time. We use a feeding pillow each day. He stretches his legs and lower parts of his body but I don't see much movement around his head/neck. More often than not, he ends up falling asleep on the pillow?

I know he's still young but is there anything I can do to help him gain control of his neck muscles please? Should I be putting his arms under his chest instead?

We use interesting toys with sounds and lights to gain his attention but it doesn't seem to make much difference.

I've tried to put him on my tummy/chest but he seems to find this more difficult as he cries and screams.

I didn’t. It wasn’t a thing when mine were babies.

They were also all eating (sucking) on toast and eating purées from 3 months too though so advice was different then.

All fit and healthy now as adults.

Presumably that's 80s or earlier then in which case they'd have been on their tummies to sleep? So getting loads of tummy time compared to babies today who sleep on their backs and are generally in a chair or bouncer while awake.

Late 90s! I can’t remember if they slept on their tummies or not but that rings a bell.

They definitely shouldn't have been on purees at 3 months then 😂

But yes, before the (very effective) Back to Sleep SIDS campaigns babies spent a lot more time on the their tummies than babies do now, especially in cots and prams - they developed neck strength and the muscles in their arms etc. They had round heads.
Now babies are almost never put on their tummies, misshapen heads are common, motor skills are delayed, some babies never learn to crawl. So encouraging parents to safely put their babies down on the floor uncontained for a few minutes a day tries to address this.

He is only little but check hearing and vision in next few months .

and ask gp to check if he showing signs of hypotonia (is he trying to hold head up at all ?) Does he seem strong? Kicks? Starting to try to grasp things? Alert? Smiles? Maybe wait a few weeks to see his development . How was his birth ?

Thanks for explaining, I wondered what the reason for it was but that makes sense
