Thinking about working 5pm until 10pm/11pm instead of a 9 till 5 job so I can stay at home and look after kids then go to work when my partner gets in at 5pm .. thinking about doing this 6 days a week xx

Depends - how old are the kids, how far is the commute and what time would you need to be up the following morning?

I do a week of 3pm - 11pm shifts sometimes and after a couple of days I’m shattered and couldn’t be getting up at 6:30am to look after children all day to then go back to work again. But, I don’t get to sleep until 1am ish on those days. If you could be home asleep by 11:30pm it would probably be okay?

Child is just turned 2. She's awake about 8 , so I would get about 7/8 hours sleep xx

You could try and see how it goes. Only thing is, I wouldn’t rely on a 2 year old continuing to sleep until 8am every day. If that suddenly becomes 6am because you know, toddlers be toddlers, it could become very hard.

Worked fine for friends but you won't se your husband a lot.

Littletreefrog · 25/10/2025 23:04

Depends if you are fine with barely seeing your DH. It sounds very tiring to me.

Gosh sounds like a killer. If life with child is a breeze but finances are tight it might work for a time, but as a permanent solution I think it would grind you down massively. There's just no give in the system.

Do you not get 30 hours free childcare? That might take the edge off things.
