4 year old won’t do a poo in potty / toilet

My daughter has turned 4 and won’t do a poo anywhere but in a nappy. She’s done wees in potty and toilets since she was 2 with no issues but refuses to do a poo there. She never goes at nursery, she did one poo in the potty when she was 2 but got upset about it (I wonder if seeing jt alarmed her)
We have tried gentle encouragement, rewards and also being more firm and taking nappies away (she just got so upset and withheld her poo causing constipation)
wondering if anyone else has experienced this and any advice please?
we have a 3 month old too so she’s had a lot of change recently

Dd was dry but wanted her nappy for poos. I stuck this until she was nearly 3. We used towelling nappies - the old fashioned ones that needed folding. One day I just said she was to do her poo in the toilet. I had had enough.

She got more and more wound up as it got closer and closer. She brought her nappy out, laid it on the ground and lay on it trying to do it up, getting quite distressed. Our toilet is quite close to the kitchen so at the very last minute, I just picked her up and ran, plonked her on the loo and it all fell out.

Thankfully, once she did it the once, she was fine. So I made a fuss which got her all pleased with herself and away we went. But it was certainly a psychological hurdle she needed to get over.

Had this with one of mine. Went cold turkey on nappies and got constipation medication. Horrific month but he got it in the end and realized it was either shit his pants or go in the loo!

Bribery. We had poo presents. I went to the pound shop and bought a few little toys, wrapped them up, showed them to her and explained she’d get one if she went in the loo. After a day or two we had success.

Also, I let her watch me do a poo. She’d been in the bathroom with me before but hadn’t actually witnessed the act so to speak. So I think once she saw that happen she understood a bit better.

Have a look on ERIC website, there’s some great advice on there. I feel your pain, particularly with the withholding x

I agree with laxatives as above - constipation really commonly occurs when toilet training due to withholding. My son was the same and it took a combination of bribes and laxatives. And I don’t mean just a chocolate button for a bribe I mean a toy he had wanted for ages. He’s been pooing on the toilet for about six months now and I genuinely thought we’d never get there . I’m sure you’re doing great x

Agree also with Eric website - including a story about a child who practised sitting on toilet with lid down then lid up and then for longer and longer periods etc overtime
