Question about calpol help!

Ejs890011 · 21/10/2025 14:24

my 13 week old had his 12 week vaccinations today.
i gave him 2.5ml of calpol before his jabs, i got confused when they said to give him 3 doses so i have given him 7.5ml of calpol in one hit. It has been 4 hours after the 2.5ml dose.
should I worry?
it basically says in 24. Hours children can’t have more than 10ml so I have provided that but I was just worried given 7.5ml in one go might be bad

It’s probably going to be fine but he has had 10ml in 4 hours so I would probably run this one by the GP rather than mumsnet.

Superscientist · 21/10/2025 15:29

They meant 3 doses 4h apart so 2.5ml at 12, 4 and 8.
7.5 ml is the dose for 2-4 year olds.
It is probably worth contacting your GP for advice on what to do next.

You should call 111 now and make sure you have an accurate weight. Safe dosage is based on weight at that age.

I get that mistakes are made but Calpol is paracetamol and overdosing on paracetamol is not something to piss about with.

I would contact GP or A&E, your baby is very young and may need monitoring.

Anditstartedagain · 21/10/2025 15:44

You need to call 111. It would be helpful if you have his current weight.

Honestly he will be fine, when I had my first baby the doctor told me to give him some calpol as a new mum I asked how much (i had never bought it before so didn’t know it came with a dosing guide) and he replied ‘a bit, half a teaspoon to a full teaspoon, slightly more won’t harm him’ so I’m sure you’ll be fine. You can always go and see your GP but they will send you to hospital and they will do bloods and lots of others tests you’ll be on there hours.

This is really dangerous advice and that Doctor needs serious training. Calpol is paracetamol and the correct dosage should be followed. Yes, it is likely that the OP’s child will be fine but they need medical advice as we have no idea of the baby’s weight.

I am astounded that you didn’t realise that Calpol had a dosage guide- as all medications do and even if it’s your first baby you’ve surely taken some form of medicine before.

How long ago was this? Sounds like something from the 70’s tbf

111

i find it interesting how people can do it wrong or ask a doctor how much to give, when the dose is written on every box sold

LavenderBlue19 · 22/10/2025 12:50

You need to call 111. They will probably want to check him over in person, if only to verify his weight.

I never believe ’my doctor said’ posts, especially when it’s something g so ridiculous as the one on here. However, even if the doctor did say it, it’s hardly sound medical advice to be sharing with a worried parent. The only course of action for a potential paracetamol overdose is to check with a medic.

babyno2isdue · 22/10/2025 13:49

I did similar with my first gave 5 instead of 2.5 after I read the box 3 times Confused I realised right away called 111 and they checked his weight (he was tiny prem baby) and just advised to miss a dose. I blame the lack of sleep.

weirdly the doctor who called me back via 111 gave me a right talking to for giving calpol with no temp present even though I was instructed to all be it the correct dose by the nurse along with an NHS leaflet advising the same. Very strange how he didn’t know it was standard advice given.

i now check check and check again and its not happened since thankfully
