Unwell toddler

My DD has had a fever, chesty cough and runny nose since Tuesday. Temp ranges from 38-39.4 at highest. She doesn’t appear terribly unwell, still drinking, eating very small amounts and passing urine fine.
But she is breathing very fast around 60 breaths per minute. There’s no other signs of distress like tugging in at neck or nostril flaring but when she breaths maybe every 5 breaths it’s like she’s holding her breath for a second then forcing a breath out. She seems happy watching tv and chatting away but does this warrant a 111 call or just see how things go?

The noise she makes when she’s forcing out a breath I can only really describe is like she’s pushing to go to the toilet, hope that makes sense.

Sounds like Bronchiolitis

Itake doctors or walk in
That’s what I’d always recommend to families I work with.

No harm in contacting 111 to put your mind at rest

If you're worried enough to post here, it's worth a call to 111.

Gabbycat245 · 18/10/2025 12:23

I would see an OOH GP/walk in centre for that. Could be bronchiolitis or a chest infection. Either way I'd want her sats checked.

Bitzee · 18/10/2025 12:26

I wouldn’t be mega worried but I would be thinking possible chest infection so I think calling 111 to try to see an out of hours GP is a good idea.

My 13-months old was the same a couple of weeks ago, then better for a week, and now he struggles again. There are a lot of come / chesty viruses going round. If you’re worried, get it checked out

I'd be worried with that respiration rate and grunting sounds as it can be a sign they are really struggling. I'd definitely want her to be seen today, either the out of hours GP or A&E, just to check her oxygen levels and have someone listen to her chest
