New Parent in the UK: Winter Essentials, Baby Care & Stroller Advice

Hi everyone,

I’m new to the channel, and my family and I have just moved to the UK with our 9-month-old baby. With winter fast approaching, I’m trying to get everything ready to keep our little one warm and comfortable — but since I’m still getting used to what’s available here, I’d really appreciate some guidance!

1. Winter Must-Haves:
What are your absolute essentials for a baby during the UK winter — clothing, gear, or anything else that helps keep them cosy?

2. Baby Health & Skincare:
I’d also love some advice on remedies for baby colds and coughs (we’re not NHS-registered yet, so over-the-counter or home remedies would be best). Any recommendations for gentle baby wipes, moisturisers, or skin products that work well in the cold?

3. Stroller Suggestions:
Lastly, we’re on the lookout for a good, durable stroller (“buggy,” as I’m learning to call it!). Our budget is quite tight — ideally under £50 — and we’re looking for a reliable new option, not second-hand.

Any tips, shop suggestions, or general advice for a new parent settling into the UK would mean a lot.

Thanks so much in advance!

Hello and welcome to the UK and to MN Smile

It’s been a while since mine were babies so I can’t really recommend much but health essentials i would say a thermometer to check them if they have a fever, liquid paracetamol (Calpol is a known brand but the pharmacy will be able to sell you a cheaper alternative) and a teething gel like Dentinox.

Johnsons is a well known brand for toiletries but they can be a bit harsh in young skin and my DC reacted badly to their range.

Calpol and nurofen for colds and fevers. Lots of jumpers and blankets. Stroller for £50, the Joie nitro is excellent. Aveeno products for skin. Bit pricier than Johnson's baby stuff but loads better

Fleece star wrap if not too mobile yet - very good for the swings, the car, the pram, especially if going in and out of shops. https://www.tuppenceandcrumble.com/fleece-baby-star-wrap-brights

Boots sell generic ibuprofen and paracetamol for infants

I would register with the a GP practice as soon as you can, ready for 12 month vaccines.

Agree with registering with a GP as soon as you can as the HVs like to do a 12 month check as well as the vaccines.

The vaccine schedule is here Smile

make sure you either get a stroller that comes with a footmuff and rain cover included or factor in buying separate into the cost. You will definitely need a rain cover and a footmuff keeps them warmer than just a blanket.

Skincare, child’s farm and aveeno are nice, also look for supermarket own brand equivalents to save money. Boots own brand stuff are usually nice too. Weleda are pricy but worth it, their calendula nappy cream is amazing stuff.

For colds I would look for the Calpol plug
in vapour thing.
