DD nappy rash/ excess pooing

Grim topic but please help. My 9 month old DD has suddenly started to poo about 6-8 times a day. Previously she only went about once a day, maybe a little more if she ate a lot. This has been going on for about a week and as a result she’s getting very red and sore even around her vulva. The rash started to get slightly yesterday but after dinner tonight she pooed 3 times in one hour, just little ones and that seems to have made it worse, she was crying every time she sat down and screamed at her nappy changes. Not sure what’s causing it, we did start introducing an extra bottle of formula about a week and a half ago go as her weight had decreased (she’s combi fed since 6m due to a disruption in my supply).I’m not sure it’s the formula causing it though as she’s never showed any sensitivity to it before. One thing I’m thinking it could be is lately I’m finding myself throwing lots of different bits of finger food on her tray while I heat up/ cool down her real meal (for example, today I gave her tomato, avocado, banana, apple all in one go before she had tuna pasta). This is to keep her busy as she loves food and gets very shouty once in the high chair. Would that be it? I’ve noticed there’s undigested food in her poo recently which has only happened briefly before when she started solids but now it’s most days. Anyone got any ideas as to what’s going on? Should I take her to the doctor?

I think it's probably a stomach bug if going that often, a trip to the GP is a good idea.

Could just be a stomach bug but if it’s been a week it might be worth seeing the doctor. Also potentially allergies. Definitely worth a GP’s visit in any case.

I wasn’t even thinking a stomach bug as she’s no temperature or other symptoms but probably best to check. I’ll try get seen tomorrow.

My little boy is experiencing the same, im smothering him in sudocrem and giving him plenty of nappy free time which is helping. I took him to the doctors and they've done a stool sample. He also has no temperature and no other symptoms!

how old is yours? It’s so weird isn’t it?

Stomach bug. But we started putting DS on the potty around this age because he has very sensitive skin and we'd been having nappy rashes since birth. 2-3 times a day on the potty sorted all our problems. Morning, late morning and after the afternoon nap.

Hes just turned 12 months. Disgusting, but his nappies are having a fishy smell. He does actually seem a bit better today, the rash is less sore looking. We've bought a potty to try and catch his wee when hes having his nappy free time. How is your little girl today?

Could it really be a stomach bug if poos aren’t watery?

Could it be teething? Do her nappies smell of vinegar?

Oaktreet · 10/10/2025 12:25

She's got diahorea. I would go to gp since it's been a week. Also mention the nappy rash, they may be able to give you a prescription cream.

I'm terms of nappy rash. I would change nappy as soon as she poos. Use water and not fragrances wetwipes. Use a barrier cream like petroleum jelly. People suggest nappy off to get air in there but honestly that just sounds very messy in your situation and I wouldn't do it if it was me.

MrsSlocombesCat · 10/10/2025 12:50

When I had babies with nappy rash I would put some water in the bath with a bit of baby bubble bath and salt to soak clean because I couldn't bear trying to clean them in a way that might hurt. The best thing for nappy rash is hydrocortisone cream but you'll probably need a prescription. In the meantime you could try cream with calendula, that works really well.

Thesummer · 10/10/2025 12:54

Teething. Mine poos more and gets awful nappy rash when he's teething, although it does clear up quickly with sudocrem (until the next poo!). The poos also smell disgusting during teething, sometimes vinegary but sometimes it's another smell that I can't even describe.

Dryshampoofordays · 10/10/2025 12:55

Yellow metanium would have been helpful here but it’s been discontinued. It “set” leaving a dry barrier which worked better than Sudocream etc. There may be something similar on prescription if you go to the drs.

another vote for sitting on the potty, my first baby was in a good routine of pooing once a day caught on the potty 99% of the time by age 1 with doing this consistently. Godsend as she has sensitive skin too.

No they don’t. So far she’s done two poos today and none during the night. I’ve given her bland food today mostly, maybe I was giving her too much fibre.
