Should I be worried yet?

My 8 year old has been sleeping 14 hours+ for the last 3 nights. He is not unwell otherwise, but does look a little pale and has complained of a headache and eye ache yesterday. He’s been woken for school 4 times this morning but keeps going back to sleep. Once he is up he is fully alert, so he is just very very tired?

He usually sleeps 8-7 but has been 8-10 or later Saturday Sunday and now doesn’t want to wake up this morning either.

Given his lack of obvious other symptoms should I just put this down to post viral fatigue and keep an eye on it, or should I get a Dr appointment?

I’d monitor EXTREMELY closely. Any increase in drinking? Going to the toilet more often?
Does he appear to squint at all when reading?

Could just be coming down with something but the excessive sudden tiredness would sound alarm bells for me.

are they drinking much?

I’d want him to see a doctor today about that

There is something going round that starts with real sleepiness (probably COVID realistically). I would never say don't see a doctor though.

Silly as it sounds, it could be glandular fever (EBV). I had such sore eyes and was incredibly tired. It's not just teenagers who can have symptoms. You don't necessarily get a sore throat (though it often leads to tonsillitis on top).

I wonder if migraine is another possibility - eye pain, headache, sleepiness. But it should have gone off by now.

If ever you think you a docs appt might be needed, I’d book one to be sure. No harm in getting it checked out but his symptoms are unusual for him so should be checked.

Thanks all, we saw the Dr this morning and he couldn’t pinpoint anything specific, we are to go back Friday if he is still so fatigued but doesn’t develop any signs of viral illness.

Hopefully unlikely but it could be the onset of diabetes, I would monitor very carefully and would hope that the GP did a finger prick test to check sugar levels

Type one diabetes signs are;

-tiredness.
-toileting.
-thirsty
-thinner.

Op if hes experiencing these you must get him to a&e for a blood sugar check. Undiagnosed type one is life threatening, believe me it happened to my son & nearly killed him.

More likely than anything is that he's either just fighting off an infection, or about to come down with something. Keep an eye on him for a few more days and see what happens.
