Nappies vs Nappy Pants

When did you switch from nappies to nappy pants?

FTM and DS is 8 months old, around 18lb, and currently in size 3 Pampers. He wriggles like mad during changes and I’m wondering if nappy pants would make life easier, but I’ve also heard they can be more expensive and not as good for leaks overnight.

Did you find pull-ups worth it at this stage, or did you stick with regular nappies until potty training?

thanks!

I didn’t switch to nappy pants but about size 5 when my little one was 2ish.

OtterMummy2024 · 03/10/2025 21:45

I switched to pull ups once my LO could stand up for changes (12 months). We still do nappies at night.

I switched probably around that age, basically as soon as they start rolling around when you're trying to change them and/or when they can pull themselves to stand. The nappy pants are so much easier to slide on quickly. They are ever so slightly more expensive in that you get 4 less nappies in a pack or something so I don't think that's a deal-breaker. We use rascal and friends from Tesco and have never had an issue they're great!

PSA you tear the sides to take them off. First time used them i thought you had to slide them off like pants. DD had done a poo......I won't go into detail about how that went 🙃

I’ve seen this where parents will use pull ups in the day and nappies at night and vice versa.

Im probably being a bit thick but I can’t understand why?

I find if they are wearing shoes or even just trousers it can be easier to keep using nappies as you don’t have to remove the shoes and trousers to change them. I also found nappies a bit more adjustable so was more confident about getting a good fit overnight. I only really changed to nappy pants when we were introducing the potty.

Ah - that makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

I swapped quite early to nappy pants as they are easy to change on a wriggly baby but I swapped back to nappies when they were older so I didn’t have to take shoes/joggers off and they would stand still whilst I changed the nappy.

Momstermash94 · 03/10/2025 22:17

I bought 2 big packs of pampers pull up nappies when my baby was about 7 months old and it was the most regrettable purchase I ever made! They were great in the sense that they held so much wee in the night without leaks but if your baby is like mine and does the alligator roll during every nappy change and simply changing her is akin to that of a wrestling match then I think you'll find it hard too. I couldn't wait to be finished the packs I bought and could go back to normal nappies, she made them so difficult to get on.

modgepodge · 03/10/2025 22:20

I saved pull ups for when we potty trained. So when we ditched nappies, we started using pull ups for overnights and called them ‘bed pants’ or something so as far as she was concerned, nappies were gone forever.

both mine have been fine with nappy changes though am not particularly wriggly or difficult!

user2848502016 · 03/10/2025 22:30

I never changed to pull ups, just found nappies easier because you have to take everything off to put pull ups on, and DC were always ok lying down to be changed

Babblingbooks · 03/10/2025 22:55

I think at that age normal taped nappies are easier with a wriggler - you do get the hang of getting it on them in all sorts of weird positions.
Once they’re walking it’s six and half a dozen imo. It’s easier with a pull up to do a chasing standing nappy change, which mine seemed to prefer, but it’s annoying to have to take socks and bottoms off to do it.

VikaOlson · 03/10/2025 23:05

Hate pull ups on babies and as a childminder I ban parents from providing them 😂

Surely it's messy trying to change a standing baby who's pooed??
And having to strip them every time, I don't get the appeal.

Avie29 · 04/10/2025 09:22

I started using pants when LO started trying to wiggle away, its so much easier than trying to pin them down to do up the tabs, but like a PP has said now LO is wearing trousers/shoes it will be easier to switch back to nappies so don’t have to remove trousers etc during changes and she doesn’t try to wiggle away as much anymore xx

naemates · 04/10/2025 09:35

I bought and carried both and used whatever was easier in the situation

HappyAsASandboy · 04/10/2025 09:42

I found absorbancy to be about the same.

The problem with nappy pants is that you have to take off their shoes and trousers at every change, whereas nappies can be changed by just pulling them down.

I did learn to change a nappy with the child standing up, once the child is stead of their feet. That makes low-facility changes much easier!

SnugSheep · 04/10/2025 15:15

8 months. As soon as the alligator rolling began 😂🫠 we use those that tear down the sides so no pulling down from standing. We also wait for those suckers to fill up because it is a slight faff pulling off socks and shoes. Nowhere near as bad for us as trying to tape up nappies on him though.

Gallanter · 04/10/2025 15:22

We never used pull ups, just nappies then normal pants when potty training. It just seemed easier to change by taping up sides and only having to pull trousers halfway down.

user593 · 04/10/2025 15:26

DC2 (20 months) is size 6 and I’ll be moving him into nappy pants soon. We moved DC1 at around this time so he could get used to them before potty training and so he didn’t have to deal with two changes at once. I do know some of DC1’s friends who were moved into nappy pants just before potty training hated them and one refused to wear them making potty training even more difficult.

dontcomeatme · 04/10/2025 15:37

My DS was about 2 month when we made the change 🤣 clearly I'm in the minority!

Winterscomingbrrr · 04/10/2025 20:55

@wishIwasonholiday10 @VikaOlson you just rip the sides of pull ups so they can be removed liked traditional nappies.

user593 · 04/10/2025 21:14

@Winterscomingbrrr You can’t get a pull on up without undressing though, if trousers and not a dress.

RJmama · 04/10/2025 21:43

The only time I use pull ups is after swimming: when there’s no changing table and DC is already nude after having taken off togs and swim nappy. Otherwise as PP have said, they just seem like a faff because of the need to remove shoes and trousers for every change! Nappies seem easier in that sense. But perhaps we’re lucky that DC isn’t too bad for nappy changes…

VikaOlson · 04/10/2025 21:44

Yes but you have to get a new one back on?

Absolute ball ache when you're trying to do 3 in a row or you need to get it done quickly. And at least with normal nappies you can change them quickly on your lap if there's no changing mat available.

SnowSnow · 04/10/2025 21:50

We switched to nappy pants when our little one flailed around too much for tabbed nappies to go on!
