Baby drops all balls out of the ball pit, one by one?

I have never seen any baby ‘play’ in a ball pit like this.

She is 12 months old and if we put her in a ball pit, one by one she will just pick up the balls and drop them outside of the pit.

Has anyone else ever seen this happen?

My daughter (16 months) loves games like this. I put toys out for her in her room with baby gate shut while I get shower etc and when I come back she has thrown each one over the baby gate. Loves it

I've ONLY seen babies play like this 😂

Exactly. When I read your post, @Abcabcabcee I could clearly picture a baby doing this as I've seen it so many times.

Completely normal. Look up tranforming schema.

Yep, my 12m old is currently obsessed with taking things out and putting them in to containers. Could sit there for hours. In a ball pit would likely do the same. I do wonder though - what is it that you’re worried about?

Topseyt123 · 03/10/2025 17:31

Totally normal. Balls are there to be thrown.

When I was a baby of about that age (born in 1966) I had 8 tennis balls at the end of my cot. Each morning I would wake up and begin throwing them against the wall of my parents' bedroom (I had my own room). They knew that once they had counted 8 thumps on the wall, followed by the tennis ball bouncing across the floor, then it was time to get up as I would begin shouting once I had run out of balls to throw. 🤣🤣

I assure you that there is nothing unusual about me and I am 59 now. 🤣 It was normal then and is normal now.

Sounds like you have no parenting knowledge as it’s a very common schema.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 03/10/2025 17:45

Don’t worry. In two years time you’ll be finding them under your furniture along side many many toys !

See also removing all saucepans out of the cupboard.

Yep my 2nd baby used to do this! Every single day 😂

Mt563 · 03/10/2025 17:58

I've found it helpful and interesting to think of my baby as doing experiments. She doesn't know if all the balls will act the same and actually she'll find some roll one way, some another and some might bounce, they might make an interesting noise. All this is brand new to your baby so she's trying to make sense of it and that requires a lot of repetition.

That’s kind of you to say, thank you.

Look into schema play. Repetitive motions (throwing, rolling, building etc etc) are all part of the learning process. Some children spend longer in a particular schema than others. My son is currently obsessed with posting. Doesn't mean they are autistic, and doesn't mean they are geniuses. Just means they are developing.

Btowngirl · 03/10/2025 18:06

My dd did this. She’s nearly 4 and I recently got the pit out again for her baby sister. Lasted about 2 weeks before I’ve put it away again, somehow I forgot how much I HATE reloading the ball pit 3839943 times a day.

user2848502016 · 03/10/2025 18:08

completely normal
Get rid of the ball pit before you go insane

My youngest DDs favourite game at that age was going to DD1s bedroom and emptying everything out of the bottom drawer one by one - it was easier just to leave her to it and tidy up later (DD1 was 4 and in school and never knew!)

BauhausOfEliott · 03/10/2025 18:11

Babies often love doing this sort of thing. Taking things out of containers one by one is a favourite activity for lots of babies I’ve known. My friend’s baby used to adore taking tissues one by one from a box and dropping them on the floor.

Trajectory schema if I've remembered correctly. Mine loved watching all the different ways things fell or rolled

jolies1 · 03/10/2025 18:18

Mine just throws them out one by one but same idea! They are just playing. I’m sure it’s a recognised form of play for a toddler, transporting items from one place to another.

annlee3817 · 03/10/2025 18:46

It's so hard not to compare to other babies isn't it, my first seemed to always be the one in the NCT group that did it all different from others and I used to worry so much, she's a happy 10 year old now. With my second who is 3 I would then compare her against her sister, never ending, but yes totally normal to do that, also ok to have worries :)

Yes great answer, it's normal to have worries and even healthy to worry a bit and ask for advice.
(No idea why some other posters seem to have been triggered by a simple question rather than answering normally)

Oh this has made me go back and look for my happiest video. My little girl dropping the balls out the ball pit. Then my wonderful dog picking them up and putting them back in. Lockdown. The best entertainment ever. The best bit is her laugh and the dogs patience.

Also watching someone come and pick them up and put them back so they can start again.

I think the OP mentioned banging two balls together. My sister did that with 12 eggs while sitting in her pram in a supermarket pram park (it was a thing in 1957 quite normal). I can still remember the mess and the assistants rushing up with tissues.

Mine loves pushing things through the gaps in the stair gate and watching them tumble down the stairs…

Babies can laugh their nappies off at you ripping a piece of paper in half. They are weird little critters.

Everything is new to them. Imagine being that young. Everything is new and fun and you've only just got over the joy of realising you have toes. Dropping stuff is fascinating!

Laugh their nappies off 😂 Mine did this, top quality ROFL stuff. Also absolute hysteria at me polishing the windows. And the dog’s wagging tail.
