Dummy - nighttime only?

Hello,

my baby gets very fussy at 8pm on wards so we have been using a dummy to settle her during the ‘witching hour’ she eventually spits it out when she’s asleep. in the daytime she doesn’t need it as she self soothes. Is it okay to be using a dummy just in the e evenings?

Why wouldn’t it be?!

This is the way it is recommended to use one.
Keep going if it works for you.

Thanks everybody! Health visitor said to try and use it for every nap and sleep but she really doesn’t need it in the day so I got a bit confused!

It is recommended if you use a dummy at all to offer it for all sleeps as part of the SIDS guidance, which is why your HV has said that.

Even the NHS site though says that the evidence isn't hugely strong so I always just went with whatever the baby went for. DD1 literally had a dummy for about five minutes before dropping it, only at night, and stopped at 9 months. DD2 had hers for every sleep and had to be bribed away from hers at 3.

That’s how I used it. Once it was dropped/spat out, I removed it so that it wasn’t there in the morning.
