Two year old has just sprayed a tonne of Method bathroom spray on himself

Hello,

Sorry if this is not a well put together post, I’m just really annoyed and angry at myself so if I come across as incoherent and stressed that’s why.

Partner is away so my two year son and iI are at home by ourselves.

We were in the bathroom where I used a bit of method spray to clean down the surface after I had used the shower. It’s the blue one. Anyway I put it in the bathroom cabinet storage drawer under the sink and didn’t secure the child proofing thing properly. I went back to the kitchen but before he followed me, toddler went into the draw and took it out. I went on to another cleaning job around the kitchen sink and my toddler started calling me (“mummy mummy”) so I turned around to see that he was spraying an alarming amount of method on his actual bare chest. I guess he liked the feel of it. So I scooped him up and ran him back to the bathroom to thoroughly rinse him under the shower to completely wash it off.

Then gave him water to drink. Then he was in the mood for lots of biscuits (ginger bread men).

I called my partner and when I explained, he said he thought toddler would be fine as those sprays contain degreaser and perfume.

Im not sure if much or any went in his mouth, he wasn’t complaining of a bad taste at all. I would have thought it would taste pretty evil (obviously I tried it to see and can confirm it tastes bloody awful).

Anyone else been in a similar situation? What cid you do? Is this a case for calling 111. My partner thinks the best that can happen is we go for a walk in the fresh air.

I feel just awful and am very upset. I wasn’t wearing my glasses so I only had an awareness of what was going on right in front of my face. I know better now.

Method is fairly innocuous isn’t it? There don’t seem to be any dangerous chemicals in it? He’s been washed?
It’s not in his eyes?
He would have noticed it in his mouth I think and be complaining as it’s like eating soap.
I think he’ll be fine

RibenaToothkind · 20/09/2025 11:52

Please be gentle with yourself. He will be absolutely fine.

I would say, keep an eye on him because it might make his skin a bit dry unkess he has v sensitive skin but apart from that he will be fine. Method cleaners are pretty gentle.

These things happen. I think your partner is right, go for a walk or to the park and get spme fresh air.

It might not feel like it now but in a few years you will laugh about it, I promise!

Didn’t we all do something similar to ourselves when we were little? I think you are being rather melodramatic.

He’ll be fine. You’ve washed him off and he’s had a drink and it wasn’t bleach or anything like that. Don’t panic.

Notmyreality · 20/09/2025 11:56

He’ll be fine. And at least he won’t get moldy.

LupoBianco · 20/09/2025 11:57

Thank you @RibenaToothkind and @Smartiepants79

Yes that’s pretty much what my partner has said too.

I buy the method sprays as they are the “gentle” and “natural” versions of the ordinary house cleaning sprays, but I never know if that’s just marketing. The ingredients themselves don’t look that alarming, but I’m no chemist. It says <5% Anionic Surfactants, Non-Ionic Surfactants, and the rest perfume. But I’m too afraid to look those up…

It’s basically just soap. As long as he didn’t drink it or get in his eyes it’s totally fine. Especially as it’s all been washed off very quickly.

Surfactants make things foamy. I wouldn’t waste any more time on worrying about it.

When my best friend had a baby we had only just left school and I had her 2 year old to stay at mine one night. I was about 18.
This kid went under the bathroom sink where there was a bucket with clothes soaking in powder whitener.

She was brushing her bloody teeth with the water.

I freaked out and basically waterboarded her to rinse her mouth out.

That child is now a 25 year old marine biologist.

Thanks everyone for your kind responses. He’s having a nap now, lucky him. Wasn’t fazed by the whole thing at all.

Hey, my twins liking "spritzing" which means cleaning the walls, floor etc with Method. About 10 mins into any spritzing session, they start washing each other with the Method spray 🙄 they must have ingested about a bottleful each in their lives.

They are now 7.5yo, ridiculously healthy and nothing wrong with them, never been to the GP in their lives.
