Baby cold to touch - do I worry?

My 7 month old has been fighting a virus, his temperature hit 39.9 a couple of nights ago and he’s had a bad barking cough today. Since about tea time he’s felt cold and clammy. Initially thought he’d been sweating and then it had gone cold as it was an unusually warm day. But having done tea, bath and bed he still feels noticeably cold to the touch, all over. Thermometer under the armpit reads 35.7.

He does look pale and kind of blotchy on his head, a viral rash on is body but passes the glass test. He’s sleeping reasonably normally and not seeming really unwell so we don’t know how to interpret the low temp.

I'd call 111 op to be on the safe side, hope he gets well soon Flowers

I would definitely worry. And head to A and E now.

I would check in with a doctor this evening. He might be fine but I’d want a medic to see him

I hope he gets better very quickly

Yup. A&E.
Hoping all is well but being cold to the touch can be a sign of peripheral shutdown which should be seen and assessed immediately and to eliminate sepsis.

buymeflowers · 19/09/2025 22:01

Id ring 111; I’d want him seen tonight tbh. It’s normal for my DS to have a low temp when unwell but unless it’s very typical for your baby definitely get it checked out.

SabbatWheel · 19/09/2025 22:25

My mum had sepsis when her temperature was low, please get your baby checked at AnE.

mamakoukla · 19/09/2025 22:48

In your shoes, I would want him checked out especially as he’s so young. Better to err on the right side of caution. Any worries around healthcare when DC young - were always told it’s best to get checked

AmberBeaker · 19/09/2025 22:54

My 2 DS always drop temp when sick, they go low rather than high. Also, calpol and nurofen tend to lower temps if hes been having those. It's probably the tail end of the virus working out of his system and he'll be fine but for baby that young you'll never regret getting him checked.

nosleepforthewickedx2 · 20/09/2025 00:41

My 7month old DD had the exact same last week and her temp dropped to 35.2. I did ring 111 but they told me as long as can maintain 35.5 or above there was no need for hospital. As long as wasn’t floppy or was still responsive to name etc, come morning she was absolutely fine and back to normal self.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 20/09/2025 00:52

I would 100% seek medical advice now just to be on the safe side

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 20/09/2025 02:00

I wouldn't go to A&E before calling 111, unless as PP says your baby is floppy or unresponsive.

Babies this young can go down hill quickly so keep monitoring and don't think you're wasting anyone's time if you get a green light from a doctor, but then e.g. just a couple of hours later you think things have changed.

Hope all goes well x

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 20/09/2025 02:07

A low temp can mean they're fighting an infection too. I would keep up the Calpol/baby ibuprofen. You can use both if necessary, just leave the appropriate time gap for each med. Good sign he's reasonably well with it but If you see it getting worse or you're worried, no harm getting him checked either

Rayqueen · 20/09/2025 02:38

When our little ones drop it's because there were bodies are fighting a big so more blankets to keep cosy and within a couple of days they pick up usually

Namechange2567 · 20/09/2025 02:51

Hope you’re having him checked

badjeans · 20/09/2025 09:01

Thanks all - we called 111 who didn’t think sepsis but possibly chest infection
