My little boy is 16 months he always slept in his cot and slept through
we been on 10 day holiday where he was in the same room
since being home he now wakes screaming but won’t go back in his cot he comes in bed with is and he asleep in a instant
this has been going on now for 2 weeks we try to get him in back in his cot and he wake again screaming

I think he got separation anxiety and is going through a regression

my question is how can we help him sleep in his cot again , he nap in his cot but nighttime it changes

sitting here in tears please any suggestions ?

He needs a cuddle. I'd put a mattress on the floor and baby gate on the door and ditch the cot. He'll be climbing out soon anyway. Then you can give him a cuddle and roll away once he's back asleep. Or stay there too if you fall asleep.

Our son slept in with us til he was 11 😊 he's an entirely normal teenager now.

DS2 still had the odd night in with me at ten.
We just had musical beds, everyone gets sleep then , just not necessarily in their own bed.
I recommend a double bed after a cot then you can always hop in for a cuddle.

I’d just let him share with you for now.

Eventually he’ll stop waking up in the night, and so stay in his bed.

Rubyupbeat · 16/09/2025 21:55

He's a baby and frightened, let him come in with you, where he feels cosy and safe.

JacknDiane · 16/09/2025 22:02

Let him in. He needs you.

I'd just do a pick up put down type thing essentially. Just keep putting him back when he's relaxed/very drowsy or even asleep to start with. We always did this with our kids if they had bouts of night waking and needing cuddles etc. We would always comfort of course but they always were put back in their beds afterwards, we've never co-slept. It might take a little while but eventually he will get used to it and start sleeping in his cot again. Also does he have a comforter or anything in the cot with him that might help him feel more secure? Especially if it smells like you or dad?

Never slept with my kids, they could come have a cuddle, but always went back in their cots/beds once they were more settled. I don't share with DH let alone kids 😂

Aww hope the cosleeping goes well OP - DC is nearly one, and it’s been great for our family! Makes breastfeeding sooo much easier.

I cosleeping as I found trying to transfer them to be harder work and less sleep for me and upsetting for them, lose lose! I would plan a gradual transition back to his bed if you don’t want to co sleep, trying to do it too suddenly could make their bedtime anxiety worse.

The pay off then is that you have to cope with a lot less sleep. It's not a sleep regression, it's a need to be close to you while he's not feeling great and has separation anxiety. So he is going to wake up and need you, and if he's not in bed with you then that's a bigger deal for both of you as you both get wound up and take longer to get back to sleep again.

No such thing as a sleep regression, they don't lose the ability to sleep
