Back to school, no more sleep

I wonder if this resonates with anyone who could shed light on DS.

He was always a great sleeper until he hit 5-6years old. He'd wake up distressed saying he was scared and would not settle unless next to us, so we had a mattress on our floor.

Back in July I decided to get rid of it and he started sleeping through every night in his room, I was really pleased thinking this phase was over.

However since school has started again he's started waking again. At first just needing a quick resettle, then multiple, and last night being awake from 3 to 5 am 😭.

He can't explain why, but when I lie next to him he is so twitchy, falls asleep and wakes himself laughing, or just stirs himself awake constantly, just very odd. It's like his body is not letting him sleep.

What is it? Overtiredness? Can't switch off his brain? Anxiety?

How can I help it?

Sounds overtired.

Id just put the mattress back.

I think I might have to to save my sanity. So annoying, I thought I'd won the lottery when he started sleeping in his own room again overnight.

We have had this issue over the years with DS and the mattress stayed for a looong time ! Just a thought though my DD has been transformed by using sleep gummies and magnesium supplements- is he old enough for anything like this ? DD used to take forever to get to sleep and now we realise she had restless legs and now it’s stopped !

Agree with putting the mattress back. He might need extra wind down time before bed and maybe a weighted blanket?

I have a 5 yo that has always had poor sleep we managed to get her sleeping through by playing guided meditation overnight and with a red light on in her room

He's 7, I'll look into this. His legs get very twitchy so it could be! I sometimes think it seems like a growth spurt or something

We got rid of the mattress because DS2 had moved into a big boy bed so could come into our room in the morning. When he realised DS1 was always in our room he (understandably) started feeling left out and saying he also wanted to sleep with us.

I thought it was fair to nip it in the bud and not let either of them in with us.

Well it was nice while it lasted. Back to the drawing board!

I think a weighted blanket is an excellent shout, I will look into this.

I brought bedtime a little forward today too to counteract overtiredness and got them to do a few yoga stretches which they enjoyed!
