When did you change to the seat unit on pram?

Morning all!

FTM here to a 4.5mo, I was just wondering when people switched from the bassinet to the seat unit on their prams?

Our little one seems to be getting bored almost on walks at the moment in her bassinet, and I feel she would love the seat unit to be able to look around etc. We have the Oyster 3 pram and the seat unit does lie pretty flat, but I just didn’t want to move her into it prematurely.

she has pretty good head control but obviously can not sit unaided.

Just wanted some opinions on what you think or what people have done in the past - TIA!

My first was around the 4 month mark, he was a big boy and he was a lot happier when moved. My second lasted until closer 6 months as he was more petite and a lot more content x

About 4-4.5 months. Just kept the seat permanently in the most reclined position until they were 6 months. I think good head control is key but sitting unaided is a 9 month milestone so you definitely don’t need to wait for that.

Ypu can change the seat when they have good head control and are nearly sitting unassisted. It's dangerous when they can't support their spines and ypu risk compression injuries from slumping. American guidelines are much more clear on this. Have a Google of you're unsure.

Sorry to answer your question, mine were 4m and 5.5 m when I transitioned them. Most are ready by 6m.

Mine was just after three months - but the seat unit was safe from birth, it lay properly flat. Baby decided he HATED The bassinet by that age and would scream for the first few minutes of each walk. The reclined seat was much more popular!

Among my friendship group, most were 4-6 months.

I managed to hold out until 5.5 months when he could sit up himself, although my DS was like yours, bored.

Thanks all! Our seat unit goes flat too, I tried her in it on a short walk round the block earlier and she much preferred it. Going to see how we go with it!

4.5 months but we would often have it lying flat to give the baby a rest.

Sinkingfeeling952 · 15/09/2025 15:41

As above - 4.5m with my first and 4m with my second. But I kept the seat in the flat position until nearer 6m

WhatNoRaisins · 15/09/2025 15:42

Between 3 and 5 months for most people I knew. I don't actually know anyone who made it to 6 months.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 15/09/2025 15:50

At 5 months and should have done it sooner

rosecbrm · 15/09/2025 19:26

Thanks everyone! Sounds like I'm doing the right thing then!

When MIL told me off for still using the bassinet, preferably around 4.5 months old

Our pram has 2 seated settings, one more upright and one more recliner so until his head control is completely secure, hes in the semi reclined setting on the sit up

WhatNoRaisins · 17/09/2025 06:40

I think there are also inserts that can be used in the pushchair if the head control isn't there but the baby is too long for the bassinet. Some of my friends had really big babies.

rosecbrm · 18/09/2025 16:55

Yes I’ve just been keeping the seat unit on the lowest setting which is flat anyway, she loves being able to see everything around her more now!
