Nearly 3 year old suddenly refusing fruit

Anyone had similar? My child is nearly 3, and up until last week was great with a good variety of fruit (apple/pear/grapes/bananas/ berries/etc), but for the past week he suddenly will not eat it at all! Honestly you ask him if he wants it and he says no, you serve it up like normal and he refuses to even touch it! He used to love fruit so I’m at a loss.

Any ideas what I can try? He’s not great at trying new things, but fruit has always been something that he’s been great at eating so it’s not like it’s something new.

No help-but my DS stopped eating fruit when he was two-and 22 years later still doesn’t! He can’t explain why-just says “I don’t know- I just don’t like it!” He’s a bit of a foodie so he sometimes eats it as part of a “dish”- but that’s it. He is-and always has been- robustly healthy, so it hasn’t done him any harm. It’s worth reading up about ARFID- I found that helpful.

I hate fruit. Too sweet. Ds2 will eat a banana at a push but otherwise will always go for veg. DD hates veg (always has) but loves fruit. Though dd now loves mushrooms 🤷🏽‍♀️

Thanks both. Until last week he loved it so I can’t figure out why he won’t touch it anymore! Same with veg…

Fruit is so inconsistent in taste and texture that it’s quite a normal food for young children to refuse (same for veg).

Did he get something he didn't like, a sour apple or something over ripe? And it's put him off completely, can you ask him?

foreverchangingnappies · 16/09/2025 14:58

Nothing different or that he didn’t like as far as I’m aware! Just one day woke up and won’t even consider eating it now

My nearly 3 year old ate everything. It was great! However there is now an increasing list of yucky stuff. All veg, fish, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, pears, nectarines, all happily eaten before, yucky. We are only left with strawberries that are safe and potentially bananas, red apples and watermelon depending on mood, shape, if a seed is visible 🙈

I find overuse puts my DD off. Too much of anything puts her off so I need to rotate. I also don’t even ask her if she wants xyz I just place a plate next to her and see if she snacks. Or make myself a plate of fruit and she’ll come running if she thinks it’s mummy’s food 😂

OopsieeDaisy · 16/09/2025 22:30

Following as my DC has recently done the same. Are everything before and now the only tolerated fruit is banana!

foreverchangingnappies · 18/09/2025 13:52

Thanks all. I keep offering it on his plate at mealtimes and snack time, but he isn’t touching it. Will keep trying.

I found some kids snacks and dried fruits which some are part of 5 a day which he will eat, but they’re high in sugar which isn’t ideal either! Hopefully at some point he’ll start eating it again

My son hates fruit and most veg, very much like me, I really hate veg .
Never done me any harm, rarely ill same with him, too much made about veg ect it's rubbish

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 03/11/2025 17:54

I was usually honest with my child in these situations but looking back, I think there are occasions where it's ok to lie. They don't understand that fruit is good for them but we do. I called salmon fancy chicken for ages. My son gobbled it up. He was eating salmon all along without realising. Their growth is important. Maybe you could get a type of fruit you don't usually get and tell him that you're so lucky you found it, that it's really special for some reason

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 03/11/2025 17:59

Or make it into a game with his toys and they all go to look for the magic fruit. You could tell him that some people say that it makes you run really fast if you eat it. And then he'll be tempted to eat it to find out 😅😏. Or have an aunt or other family member/friend come over and tell him how much they like it
