Bassinet to pram

Any advice - my 8 week old hates the bassinet, wants to be up looking around. End up having to get him out, every time we take him out. Anyone moved to pram earlier? I know they recommend 6 months, but he’s not happy. I end up just using the car seat more.

It would require a whole new system, but mine loves the YOYO newborn set because he can see out the bottom and sides and you can put the hood right down so he can see everyone in the supermarket. He was in the bassinet until 4 months but found it a bit warm and constricting. The yoyo is normally available second hand, especially the new born set, or you can hire the frame and add the newborn set.

I wouldn't recommend until he can hold himself up better. Could you use a sling instead?

What buggy do you have? I had an uppababy and it had a little insert you could buy to make the seat suitable from birth but which also made it easier to see out of.

The reason why the seat isnt suitable until 6months ish (and also why you shouldn't also use the car seat on the buggy frame for more than 30mins), is because it puts their spine in a poor position which isnt good for their development and can impact on their airways.

Get a sling?

We had a nuna and le clerc and in both the basinette was adjustable and the top moved so you could prop baby at an angle - worth checking if yours does too. Otherwise a foam wedge?

we did this with my oldest. It worked well.

My DS didn't like being in the bassinet from about 3 months so I mainly used the sling. It's only a few months and it will keep you cosy in the winter!

Is your buggy suitable from birth with lie flst? Not all are 6 months.

ShesTheAlbatross · 13/09/2025 07:34

I think it depends on your pram. We never had a bassinet because the pram bit lay flat and was suitable for newborns so I didn’t see the point (my DDs were both born early summer, if I’d had winter babies I’d probably have liked the cosiness of the bassinet for them).

You can’t sit them up in the pram at 8 weeks.

We had no choice I have 10lb+ babies and the average bassinets weight limit is 9kg, which my DC were by 8 weeks if not earlier. Both my DS especially were big and they had to go in the pram at 8 weeks. I kept them flat until about 3/4 months and then started slowly inclining it. I had the same problem with next to me cribs, my DC have to go into their own room before 6 months because they're not safe in next to me cribs.
What works for some may not work for others. If your pram is from birth I would pop him in it x

Yeah ours hated the bassinet, too. We switched to the normal seat about 10 weeks I think but it was a lie flat seat suitable from birth. I preferred the enclosed nature of the bassinet but I think he preferred feeling strapped in and not rolling around (it’s hilly where we live), and being able to see out.

8 weeks is a little young to be sat up in the pram if you can help it, due to still being a bit weebly wobbly (altho as parent to two FOMO kids, I understand your pain!) but I certainly didn’t wait til 6 months as I simply couldn’t due to their sizes. I think my son was just before 3 months, and I’d already been avoiding the pram because he was so crunked up, and my daughter around 4 months, both with the seat somewhat reclined as needed and a sheepskin liner to pad them in a bit too.

Sling or try a different pram.

Until closer to 5-6 months, their spine is too weak to be sat up, so be careful.
