4 year old ALWAYS snotty

My DD seems to have a constant runny/snotty nose for about 8-9 months of the year. It went away during the summer but came back in the last week of August. Sometimes it's just clear fluid but other times it's actual snot (not green as in when there's usually an infection but just that pale snot colour).

I KNOW it's normal for kids to pick up all sorts constantly especially in the winter months but no other kid seems to have it as bad as her. She's fit and well generally otherwise.

She started reception last week and so we obviously did lots of photos, there was lots of meeting of new people, walk to school etc. I feel like I was mopping her nose every couple of mins and when she comes out at the end of the day it's always a bit crusty with dry snot. She does know how to wipe her nose but of course if she's busy with a whole new routine to get used to she's not going to do it as often as needed and also I don't want to make a huge deal because eventually she'll get self-conscious about it.

We took her to the GP last year who just put it down to general colds, said it's normal etc. He did prescribe a nasal spray which didn't really do much.

To paint a whole picture she has no allergies and she has a Multivitamin everyday. I suppose she could have more variety of fruit and veg but her diet is very typical of a normal child. She has higher sleep needs than most but has always done since she was a baby - although I am starting to think she may be iron deficient?

Has anyone been through similar and can give any advice? Any supplements I could consider that may help?

Are you sure she has no allergies? I would have said the same about mine, although it turns out he has quite a severe dust mite allergy (diagnosed via an allergy test, if you met him you'd just think he's a snotty kid).

How did you go about getting an allergy test - Via GP or privately? And does he take a daily antihistamine then?

I would say allergy too. Either dust mite or mould as I assume you've had windows open for most of this hot weather. Try an antihistamine to see if she improves and don't forget that there are several different types - make a note of the active ingredient.

EDIT - She has higher sleep needs than most but has always done since she was a baby
My DD sleeps a lot plus has low/no appetite when she "needs" an antihistamine.

Wow that's interesting regarding the sleep/antihistamine thing.

What antihistamine do you use and why - I'm not very knowledgeable on allergies having been lucky enough so far to not ever need an antihistamine myself.

Yeah if it goes away during the season where we usually have the windows open day and night, it sounds as though she could be reacting to an allergen in the home.

Maybe House Dust Mite?

Ask a pharmacist for a suitable allergy drug to try for her age. They may suggest she sees the GP though.

Your DD is very young so there won't be many she can take. My DD was about 6yrs when the GP put her on a strong one (Chlorphenamine maleate) three times a day. She was fine on it, and it works, but to put a perspective over this particular one - her DF took ONE tablet and fell asleep at work for five hours, her adult sister took ONE and was so groggy she didn't know where she was. However I can take two a day to relieve symptoms with no drowsiness and DD took three (max adult dose) with no drowsiness from the age of 6! Different ingredients affect people differently so keep looking until you find one that works.

Adult DD takes Loritine but that does nothing for me or other DD. DF has sworn off all antihistamines 😂
