How big of a deal is sagging?

Eldest DS is almost 14 and wears his jogging bottoms around his bum.
I HATE it. He’s a middle class grammar school kid and it just feels cosplay-y and cringe to me not to mention looking sloppy and possibly giving off intimidating vibes.

Row this morning as he was wearing his PE joggers very low. Covered by his blazer so I only noticed when I needed to take a photo and he pulled them up

After he left, I did start to wonder whether this is just his version of rolling up a school skirt and I should just ignore it.

Ignore it. 14 year olds are supposed to experiment with clothes. He’ll think it looks stupid soon.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 09/09/2025 02:37

Tell him this originated in US prisons as a way of male inmates indicating that they were available for anal sex. That’ll make him pull them up.

NJLX2021 · 09/09/2025 03:35

just laugh at him...

Best thing parents can do with a lot of non-dangerous teenage things is just to laugh at how silly it is..

He might be grumpy for now, but pretty soon as he matures he will laugh at how silly he was as well and agree with you.

If you make a big deal out of it, that can entrench it more it and turn it into something bigger than it is.

Ignore. Why is it any of your business? And don’t laugh at him. Why would you do that??

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/09/2025 06:20

Ignore

FizzyMum5692 · 09/09/2025 11:44

I'd make fun of it.

BellyPork · 09/09/2025 12:13

He needs to start looking for a builder's apprenticeship

JimPanzee · 09/09/2025 12:16

I always told mine that of they were going to start wearing their trousers half way down their arse, I'd do the same.

GreenAndWhiteStripes · 09/09/2025 12:17

Yes it is definitely the teen boy equivalent of the rolled up skirt OP! I'd just ignore.

FizzyMum5692 · 09/09/2025 11:44

I'd make fun of it.

Please don’t make fun of him. He’s made a choice about what he’s wearing-it’s his choice, not yours. Why embarrass or upset him?

abracadabra1980 · 09/09/2025 14:07

@CurlewKate goodness me. If a parent can't laugh at their own DC for wearing something daft, what a sad life that child will live. IMHO, I found it imperative to teach my own DC that they must be able to laugh at themselves to survive life, especially where we live. The rules are/were (they are young adults now), a) you can take the piss as long as the other person can take it b) learn to read the other person and if they look like they are upset or can't take the joke, apologise, otherwise it can tip into bullying, c) never joke about physical features that the person can't change and also d) you will never be invited to every party lastly e) not everybody will like you, that's just life. They have grown up with very minor friendship issues and as young adults now, maintained a solid core of friends through school, Uni and now work. Most of our family get togethers will involve some piss taking and it is a joy as a family to have this banter. Its bonding. Please lighten up - there is far too much wokery around and not enough sensible and emotionally intelligent parenting going on these days.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 09/09/2025 14:16

@AppleDumplingWithCustardI’ve told my DCs that as well, pleased it’s not just me! Interestingly, they’ve never worn them low!

Sunnyscribe · 09/09/2025 16:28

Leave him too it, teenagers live in a different planet, they're doing what's important for them at their age.

Biblio4 · 09/09/2025 16:41

Personally I think it is our business if children are exposing their underwear which this fashion does. I know the advice has been mostly "ignore" but it's not really appropriate and could make people feel quite uncomfortable to see. I think there are basic rules of choosing your own clothing which includes covering private parts and not exposing underwear.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 09/09/2025 17:00

I'd try to ignore it too but I would hate it if my 15 year old did this…

This and because their belts have been taken away too.

There is a Miranda sketch where she hoicks up a teenager's jeans that are half way down their arse. Makes me laugh every time I think of it.

I’d just ignore it. He’s just trying to find his place in society. It’s just like dressing up as a princess really. He will just grow out of it. Probably when he encounters actual gangbangers when he no doubt looks ridiculously middle class.

MaudlinGazebo · 10/09/2025 09:24

Thanks all. I decided to apologise for going off and said if he wants sag, sag, it’s not my business really although I reserve to think it looks ridiculous!
