Cradle Cap - What actually works?!

Biosblbay · 07/09/2025 10:51

I have been using coconut oil for a few days now after someone recommended it for my 8 week olds cradle cap but it seems to be getting worse. Is there anything I can actually do to stop the cradle cap from getting worse or completely clear it, or is this something that just has to get worse to get better?

Olive oil or vaseline then a soft baby brush once you wash it is what I used to do it can a while to clear though.

Coffeeishot · 07/09/2025 10:56

You can't really stop it forming do you brush your babies head?

mindutopia · 07/09/2025 11:41

Coconut oil or olive oil, leave to soak for a few minutes and you have to literally scratch the scales off with your fingers. It’s a build up of skin that needs to be removed. The oil alone won’t get rid of it, it’s just to soften the skin so you can take it off. It does work but you’ll need to keep doing it regularly for a few months (or longer if you have a baby with eczema as it tends to hang around). I only ever did it like once a week. Not every day. Once the scales are gone, they won’t come back for a bit.

I was breastfeeding and stopped eating eggs. Another more experienced mum suggested it to me. My little one had such recurrent cradle cap, I would remove with olive oil but it was persistent. Stopped when I stopped eating eggs.

Tbh my son’s was so gross (he had hair too, which made it worse), that I used Nizoral shampoo, which worked

Michaelah · 07/09/2025 11:54

Note, you aren’t meant to, but his was so horrid and gunky that I was fed up with messing around the approved methods.

Colief scalp oil followed by brushing with a soft baby hair brush sorted my daughter’s cradle cap, which was very thick and crusty. Took a week or so of using but her scalp is looking much better. It’s still a bit flaky in places but the thick crusty patches have gone.

My eczema prone three year old still somehow has it under her hair so I might try this. Oils have done nothing over the years.

Stopped eating eggs and dairy (i was breastfeeding). He had other signs of a dairy allergy (unsettled, lots of colic). That sorted it. When it came to weaning, we confirmed he was very very allergic to them.

Time. It goes eventually.

shardlakem · 07/09/2025 13:20

Loyon shampoo and one of those spiky brushes... not sure I would use it on such a little baby though

Superscientist · 07/09/2025 13:39

Soak with olive oil for a few hours/overnight then clean off the olive oil with a hot (not too hot) cloth

Mairzydotes · 07/09/2025 13:40

Capasal shampoo, although perhaps isn't suitable for a tiny baby.

Biosblbay · 07/09/2025 14:45

@Coffeeishot I do but with a really soft bristle brush, do I need to use something a bit more exfoliating?

Biosblbay · 07/09/2025 14:46

@mindutopia I was told to never pick it, should I start doing that then?

I wouldn't no just keep going with the baby brush but you can gently pick it off , do you leave the oil.on for long?.

Coffeeishot · 07/09/2025 14:48

Fwiw it isn't harmful i get that it is unsightly but it should eventually clear up.

It's not harmful but it does stop hair growth so it does need clearing up, and it doesn't usually go away on its owne without any help

Mintearo7 · 07/09/2025 14:51

Would comb it occasionally to lift the scales off after a bath, But my Mum kept saying it will go by itself by age 1ish and it did exactly that.

Yeah i understand that i was just saying it will clear up if it is treated,

Cerialkiller · 07/09/2025 15:08

I just gently scraped it off with my nails in sections over few days.

Avie29 · 07/09/2025 15:14

I always use baby oil, pop in on their head an hour or so before bathtime and then a headlice comb takes all of it off, in the bath, i had to do it for my 20 month old couple weeks ago, its gross cause it gets the comb all gunked up but it works wonders xx
