2 year old only wants bedtime milk from baby bottle - not cup.

He usually is obsessed with his milk. Drinks it in seconds. Moans when it’s over. But since I’ve switched to a cup (I’ve tried 3 different ones), he’s just lost interest. Any advice? HV told me he shouldn’t be drinking from a baby bottle so not sure what to do. From 210ml in seconds, he does 50/60mls max and takes 10/15 mins

Don’t worry about it , if he’s having a balanced diet it is not that relevant at 2 .

Have you tried the 360 sippy cup? My DCs seem to like that l, they lay down and drink it, kind of sucking at it similar to a bottle

MotherofPufflings · 06/09/2025 18:23

Drinking milk from a bottle is generally discouraged past the first because the milk pools around their teeth which can increase the chance of tooth decay. However, if he drains the bottle quickly and you brush his teeth before he goes to sleep, then personally I think the risk is negligible.

@tinyspinygood to know as wasn’t sure how much milk they needed at this age!

@MotherofPufflingsthat’s exactly what I was doing and what I thought! I think I might do it on occasion

Does he sleep through the night? If he sleeps through after 60ml of milk then that’s fine and I would say that it’s better not to gulp milk down so fast.

I’m not sure that they need milk, as such, by that age.
Personally, I would switch to some sort of cup but not worry too much about how much he’s actually having. Milk is one useful food item out of many by then, hopefully.

Theunamedcat · 06/09/2025 18:27

I wouldn't worry sounds like he was comfort sucking rather than needing milk

He has yes! So far - fingers crossed :)

Leave him be with his bottle but clean his teeth well at night.

Two of my GC whom I looked after while parents at work, used to have their "milky bottle" with me when they were up to 6/7. It was a sort of a mad-thing-that-happens-at-grandma's joke and made everyone smile. They loved it - back from school, tired and fretty - veg out with a nice bottle of milk in front of children's TV with a cuddle. They are older now but we still laugh about it.

Imenti · 06/09/2025 18:29

Keep trying, my son was the same and in the end he just downed his milk from his 360 as he had no other choice! Stay strong! Brushing teeth straight after eating and drinking is actually not recommended as you're teeth have been weakened by sugars etc you're meant to do it before 🤷🏼‍♀️

KawasakiBabe · 06/09/2025 18:29

My DS used to have a bottle at bedtime till he was about 3 or 4. I thought it wasn’t much of an issue tbh. He’s 23 now and perfectly normal.

Although much more likely to fall asleep with a bottle of beer in his hand lol

MotherofPufflings · 06/09/2025 18:32

Milk is still a really good source of nutrition for toddlers. I wouldn't cut the bedtime milk out if he's enjoying it just because he won't drink from a cup

GivingUpFinally · 06/09/2025 18:58

Get a soft spout cup. Nuby do some. My two yo uses one and we are transitioning to an open cup now. Its a long slog. But personally, I can't wait to get rid of the spout cups and weighted straw cups.

We poked a hole in the nipple one night, so the nipple would collapse and he whinged and whined while we explained it was broken. Gave him a soft spout cup. He had barely Aby the first bight but accepted it. Night 2 and 3 were brutal with tears and screaming but he adjusted and has been fine.

coxesorangepippin · 08/09/2025 03:00

It's fine. At age three he will not have a bottle, so this'll be an old problem

The nurse will say anything, she's not the one trying to get a child to go to sleep.....

Welshfiver · 08/09/2025 06:31

Mine was the same - loved milk and still has lots. Had a bottle till 3 and then I managed to find a big sippy cup that looked a bit similar to a bottle that he eventually accepted. A dr browns one.
