Hello!

my 4 day old sleeps like an angel in the day but at night she’s wide awake midnight - 3am and always vomits her milk this time too. Any advice please?!

4 DAYS old? Umm, yeah, totally normal I'm afraid OP. Hang on in there a few weeks yet. Do you have support?

That’s made me feel so much better to hear it’s normal. I was worried I was doing something wrong! Yes loads of support thank you. She’s fell asleep now bless her

She doesn't know what time it is. I made the awful mistake of disturbing my newborn sleeping baby when I arrived home from the hospital. Because I wanted to cuddle...didn't do that again 😭

Her sleep will be all over the place for many weeks to come, she has no concept of day and night whatsoever yet.

She has a teeny little tummy which can only take a small amount at a time, so she'll contimue to wake at all sorts of random times for a feed. Her digestive system is immature and still getting used to milk and she'll bring milk back up sometimes.

Rest assured it's all normal, you are doing an absolutely great job. Congratulations on your baby girl, OP.

Completely normal and will be for the newborn period and probably longer

FTM6781 · 05/09/2025 03:16

Totally normal. Try to expose baby to sunlight morning, day and and afternoon, it really helps.

Mine was never quite so bad as to sleep all day but even we had lots of split nights until about 6 or 7 weeks, maybe longer actually. I have photos of me and him on his playmat at 2am 😅

Aw thankyou everybody. As you can tell this is my first baby girl!

she seems to be eating more at night too then the day, I’m guessing this is normal to!! She’s just slept for 50 mins now back up for a feed haha

Congratulations! The first few weeks can be tough with little one being nocturnal, so rest and sleep during the day any chance you can.

Like someone else said, if you can expose her to plenty of daylight during the day then great. Then make evenings and night times dark/dim with very little noise or stimulation, this will help to teach her the difference between night and day. But try not to put too much pressure on either of you, and enjoy the bonding time when it feels like only the two of you are up in the whole world 😊

Newborns have their days and nights backwards.

Sleep/ eat when baby does…this is imperative to your well being. Try to not encourage long sleeps during day. Naps yes but avoid dad or grandparents holding/ rocking encouraging baby to sleep all day. Everyone loves to hold a sleeping baby.

I worked late shifts so my baby slept until 12 midnight becuse my footsteps all over the hospital lulled her to sleep and as soon as I got into the car or my bed to sleep she woke up!

gradually acclimate baby to being awake during day with naps and sleep at night
with night time feedings. My two woke every 2 hours to bf for a long time and woke up at 0630 on the dot for years. But they went to bed easily early and are great sleepers still to this day.

bebopalula111 · 05/09/2025 05:36

congratulations. If you google the 4th trimester it’s completely normal.

Paaseitjes · 05/09/2025 06:37

Everyone says they don't know day and night, but mine could sleep all day to build up the energy for a really good cry at 3am. I think maybe gas built up because in the day he was being moved around in my arms but at night he had to just lie there for a few hours.

Welcome to the babies who give us hell innewborn stage and potentiallly beyound.

Cluster feeding is normal. Please look up an INternationally Board Certified Lactation Conaultant online. Emma Picket is fantastic loads of free resources and reassurance. Babies want to feed early hours as that is when Prolactin is highest they smell it!!!

My 1st was a hoob monster at nights sometimes every 45mins on and off for weeks then every 1.5 / 2 hours. Took him.2 years to sleep.all night. And he was weaned at 20months. My 2nd complete opposite Indid nothing differently. He slept all night with 1 feed from day one! Until he was 6 months. He only lost 0.04% of his birth weight so midwife said let him sleep. But 6 months dreaded sleep regression and he needs to be comfort nursed back to sleep 3 times a night.

Babies are unique and you can do everything to help but baby will do what baby wants. A big test of patience and acceptance. You try to control and micromanage but something's are completely out of our hands.

I nearly drove myself insane with sleep consultants with my first nearly ended uo with PND i may have had it never got it seen to. All becuase comparing my baby to othera who slept well.

Hold on OP your do what you can and just follow babies cues.

Yes, possibly as digestion slows throughout the day.

But also in the womb babies are more active at night and they have that pattern for a while on the outside. Some longer then others. In the day baby was lulled.to sleep.with movements and at night your apt rest and baby wakes up more often

853ax · 05/09/2025 07:02

Congratulations and good luck, just follow her lead rest whenever you can, time definitely goes slower at night time when tired. First few weeks hard responsibility of baby is a big adjustment.
Any time before midnight helps if she sleeps any stage after 8pm go to bed yourself too if you have any shut eye before midnight it definitely helps with those hours after.
Lots sleeping based on their personality I had a baby who was a great sleeper as baby and all along now a teen. On the other side one who heading into teens still not a good sleeper.

ComfortFoodCafe · 05/09/2025 07:11

Totally normal for a baby. The phrase “slept like a baby” is a lie.
