How to get 10 month baby to sleep passed 4.30

My 10 month old wakes up at 4 am on the dot for day. There's no getting him back to sleep and been like this for months. I've tried later bed times earlier bed times DIY extra blackout. He goes to bed at 7. Like I said if he goes down later he still wakes at 4.30 and its a huge battle fighting with the tired tantrums and keeping him awake. Plus i love that little time to chill after being mum all day since 4 am.

He goes for his first nap at 8.30 for about an hour and another one about 1.30 for an hour.

I just want him to get to 6 and I'd he happy it makes the dsys so long and stressful where I'm tired. He wakes in the night too not for feeds but just random disturbances and on good nights just for his dunmy. X

I'm no expert in baby sleep but I've done a fair bit of reading because my daughter's sleep goes through ups and downs. This sounds exhausting.

Adding this up, am I right in saying he gets about 11 hours sleep in a 24 hour period? That doesn't seem like much so I wonder if he is overtired. Have you tried longer naps? How many nights did you try earlier bedtimes for? It apparently takes 2-4 weeks before they settle into a new routine.

Another thing I've seen suggested, but never tried it myself, is to rouse him out of his sleep just before the time he normally wakes at. Not fully wake him up, just nudge him enough that he enters a new sleep cycle. It's called the wake to sleep method if you Google it.

miamiamia869 · 02/09/2025 16:48

No never heard of that method. It wasn't 2-4 weeks more like a few nights very inconsistent really. Yeah about 12 hours and been like this a while now. Before that he didn't nap good either. Sometimes 10 minutes in the day but he has finally got there with his nap routine. No it's not much and it's really tireing now lol xx

Babies tend to wake between the hours of 3-5am because they're cold, perhaps try and little sleeveless vest under his jammies?

I wonder if you try and drop the morning nap and consolidate him into one long nap in middle of the day. Wake him up 2-230pm to make sure he has plenty of sleep pressure to hopefully sleep longer through the night.

And if/when he does wake at 0430am then minimal interaction, obv no light or stimulation at all.

And I guess food intake comes into it doesn't it. To make sure he's not waking because he's hungry!

Following with interest as my 5 month old ds has been getting up between 4 and 5am for weeks! It makes the days sooo long agreed op, solidarity!

Icanttakethisanymore · 02/09/2025 20:39

It’s tricky because when they are napping, they can make up sleep in the day so strategies to change their sleeping patterns at night get diluted. In my experience though, ultimately, consistently later bed times make for later waking up times too (although you need to stick to it for a while before it will take effect). I know it’s nice to get them down at night but I used to have to put my baby down at about 8:30pm at that age and he’d still usually be up at 5:30. If I’d put him down at 7pm he absolutely would have been up at 4am.

You have my sympathy- I’ve had two like this. That feeling of dread when they stir at some stupid ungodly hour and you just know you won’t be able to get them back to sleep. It made me want to scream. It won’t be like this forever.

@ladybird30 Thank you we do always struggle with what to put him in for sleep my husband is always overly hot and I'm always overly cold so hard to judge lol. He's been wearing just a sleepsuit for a few nights and when it was warmer just a short sleeve romper. Very interesting will keep this in mind thank you
@jumpintheline
@jumpin Thank you he eats loads so I don't think it's hunger but I am thinking the same as you about dropping that morning nap and having one afternoon one! He's so grumpy tired come 8.30 though I will have my work cut out lol
@Icanttakethisanymore yeah I think I need to try cut that daytime nap and maybe a slightly later bedtime. Thank you xx

Personally I think he’s a bit young for only napping once a day. Most DC only drop to one nap after 12 months.

I do agree though that a later bedtime might not be attractive but might be the only way to get a later wake up. Could you do bedtime 15 minutes later for a few nights and see if that has any effect?

What does he eat and drink in the day too?

Could be waking cold. Unless you’re outside the UK somewhere much warmer than it is here right now then just a sleep suit doesn’t sound warm enough. Have you looked at the grobag charts to see what’s recommended for the temperature?

miamiamia869 · 03/09/2025 07:51

@BunnyRuddington he has 3 bottles. 8oz morning 8oz before bed and a 7 oz about 3pm. Doesn't always drink that. He has breakfast usually porridge toast or bagel with maybe egg or cheese and fruit. Lunch more Picky bits maybe chicken and veg with fruit and biscuits or baby veggie stick crisp. Dinner he has what we have. Meat carbs and veg and a yogart. And maybe some snacks some days too. Yeah 15 minutes could be done for sure I will try this

Could you try him with some porridge or a sandwich before bed? It might help him stay asleep for longer.

And I know it might seem counter-productive now but at 10 months he only needs 15floz so it might be time to drop the first bottle and see if he’ll eat more solids through the day?

Icanttakethisanymore · 03/09/2025 08:41

I think you might struggle to drop a nap at this age. Sometimes it’s just a case of waiting until things change (I’m sorry, I know that feeling of being desperate to do something). I would push the bed time back though.

good luck x

mindutopia · 03/09/2025 09:48

Cosleeping. Even when they slept in their own room, they would come into ours early morning so we could all get back to sleep.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/09/2025 09:53

Is he in his own room? Is his nappy wet?

I treated any wake up before 7am as if it’s the middle of the night, so would check they’re okay, check not too hot or cold, change nappy if very wet, offer a drink of water and then once I knew they’re fine leave them to go back to sleep.

Dd slept much better once in her own room as she is a light sleeper like I am.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 03/09/2025 17:44

Bottle and cuddle in your bed with a dummy he might fall back asleep? Or dream feed?

coxesorangepippin · 03/09/2025 18:48

Nothing you can do

Just go to bed earlier
