I have the most ridiculous stairs! Please could someone help me get my head round how I would baby proof them? What gates and gate fixtures would work best? Anyone got similar?
I live in a very awkward Edwardian terrace….crap for baby proofing and it’s rented too.
anyone got any advice?

You can get extenders that attach onto stair spindles on Amazon.

Bobbieiris · 31/08/2025 23:16

@Justdancinginthedark thank you. I’ve seen the extenders it’s more the shape of the gate I’m struggling with. I’m not sure if a standard straight across gate with an extender would work?

Are they as steep as they look in the pic?

Can you get a gate for the bottom and never leave the toddler able to access them from the top?

Any chance of getting them carpeted? How old is your DC? I had some tricky stairs in last place and my SMIL took it upon herself to teach toddler DC to safely come down them backwards. It may have been the only helpful grandparents she has done.

Forget the stairs, just buy a huge old fashioned wooden play pen so that when your child is unsupervised you put them in the playpen whilst you go to the toilet or answer the door etc.

That looks hard, I'd probably get something for the bottom and maybe put a gate on their bedroom door instead of on the stairs top.
Another option is to get a handy person in to build something solid (but temporary) in the right position to attach a normal stair gate. Then you can get it removed again in a few years, without too much repairs needed.

We have very similar stairs and put a baby gate on the bedroom door and then did not let them anywhere else upstairs unless they were very closely supervised. We spent a long time trying to find other alternatives and eventually gave up.

Yours are more awkward than ours, but what we did was:
Baby 1 - playpen on upstairs landing. But his room wasn't actually on that landing so he didn't need to be up there that much.
Baby 2 - attach a flat piece of wood to the end spindle of the landing rail thingy, and fix a retractable baby gate to that and to the wall on the other side. You'd need a much fatter piece of wood than us though as your rail doesn't come all the way to the top of the stairs. Also it does involve drilling into the wall and banister, so you'd have to make that good when you move out but at least it's painted.

It also depends on the baby - you might find the plunging headfirst down the stairs phase doesn't last that long.

We had wooden stairgates when mine were young. They weren't a frame around them style much more gate like, and we could swing them flat against the wall when they didn't need to be in place so not at all obstructive. We just couldn't get the standard size/type ones to work anywhere except in the kitchen doorframe. That was a Victorian/edwardian terrace too.

Would something like this work for the top?https://www.safetots.co.uk/safetots-make-your-own-bottom-of-stairs-configuration-metal-panels.html If you effectively extended the top bannister with a stairgate panel and then hinged the stairgate off that? Safetots are really helpful, you might be able to WhatsApp them your photos and ask for advice.

Our stairs are similar to yours at the bottom and our handyman fitted our gates with a block of wood between the gate and the wall to get around the skirting board/cornicing.

As soon as my daughter could crawl we taught her to climb the stairs safely and gave her plenty of opportunities to do so. We only used the gate at the bottom of the stairs for a week.
We were in a 70s house with horizontal boards instead of vertical spindles so we avoided her being on the landing on her own. We did have a gate at the top too but really that only came into use properly rather than being an ornament when we switched her to a bed at 2

Mustbethat · 01/09/2025 16:09

Don’t put a gate at the top of those stairs. If they climb it that is a huge fall.

gate or block the bottom. Supervision upstairs.
