Worried 3 year old may have diabetes

Before i start, we have an appt on friday at the Gp.
But i just need to talk out my worries.
DS is 4 in October. Hes always been a dinky little thing (still in 2-3 clothing), hes been dry now for a year, but last 2 weeks hes been wetting the bed at night which is unusual for him, he has also had 3 toilet accidents the last couple days which again isnt like him. Hes drinking loads and is constantly saying hes hungry. But after he eats he says his belly hurts. And hes been saying that for a few weeks.
Whilst it could be something of nothing and maybe just a growth spurt, have this nagging feeling about diabetes. It runs in the family on my side (mum and nan). Am i overly
Worried? Someone told me about a sweet smell and i remember now the other day his breath smelt funky. But i never thought anything of it. Basically i just need to know if i should panic or not 😆

I would be going a walk in/out of hours now. I would not be waiting until friday. your gp will refer for more tests anyhow but the minimum would be a finger prick test

Sadly it does sound rather worrying. I would call 111 for advice as to whether you need to see someone sooner than Friday, or give the Drs a call in the morning. When my friends child was diagnosed as a toddler (years ago) her thirst was incredible, like nothing would quench it, and constant wet nappies. Also just looked pale and poorly.

It's the smell of pear drops on the breath that can indicate ketones in the saliva, if I remember correctly, so yes, potentially another red flag. Try not to over worry, but get checked out as soon as you can. They can do so much more to make living with diabetes a little more bearable these days I believe.

Hope everything is okay @Username0110 and you're either on the phone to 111 or on your way to getting checked out. I think with history in the family it's all the more important to get proper advice.

Do your mum or nan have a fingerprick meter or ketone test strips that they could check him with now?

I did think about this! Not sure how he would handle it but im going to see if we can try ❤️

Hi, yes thanks ❤️ its that nagging motherly instinct that you just cant shake off. Dont worry, i shall update you when i can ❤️

That's a really good idea. Hope all goes well Flowers

Friday is not soon enough. Please, please, get him checked out now. If this is diabetes he could be very ill by Friday, and if this is diabetes it is so manageable.

My little nephew was fobbed off at the GP for weeks an end and was admitted to hospital - was only 4 yrs old when his mum took him to A&E as a last resort- he was the same bedwetting after being dry for a year and unquenchable thirst. Lives a relatively normal life with treatment.

Lookabitfurther · 27/08/2025 23:22

Happened to us when dd was a toddler we got fobbed off repeatedly for 2 weeks and in the end the GP told me in no uncertain terms that they thought I had a problem and sent me away, a different GP who they’d spoken to after then phoned me and called us back to check her blood glucose to put my mind at rest needless to say we were sent straight up to a and e (who had also sent us away the week before with antibiotics saying the +++ glucose in her urine was due to a UTI ). If you think it’s diabetes go to an and e and insist on a finger prick !

Mrsmch123 · 28/08/2025 20:19

@Username0110how did you get on?

Username0110 · 29/08/2025 14:53

there are viruses that can cause bladder spasms and lead to unexplained wetting. Keep an eye for a week and see how he goes

Seismicshift · 29/08/2025 22:04

That's great news OP, must be a huge relief. You did the right thing getting checked out. Good luck getting through the bed wetting.

nocoolnamesleft · 29/08/2025 22:20

Oh, that’s good news.

Username0110 · 29/08/2025 22:42

Thanks ❤️ sometimes i feel like im just overly worried about him, especially as hes my rainbow baby (i have a 9 year old too 💖) took a while for him to be in my arms and he didnt have the best start in life either so i try not too over think things but sometimes that nagging feeling we get as mothers cant be overlooked!
