Silent reflux, mild CMPA or just a fussy baby?!

DD is 5 weeks old and for the past couple of weeks has been really unsettled, spending probably 90% of her time awake crying.

I have a DS (3) and remember there being a fussy phase at this point but I’m not sure if there’s more to it with my little girl and feel something is causing her discomfort.

She has ongoing nasal congestion, sneezes, coughs and hiccups a lot. She makes a gulping/spluttering noise in between feeds as if there’s something in her throat and seems to be in pain after feeds as will squirm, cry and pull her knees up to her chest / arch her back. She does tend to bring her wind up well.

Her nappies are horrendous - she has 8-9 soiled nappies a day and they are pretty explosive and sometimes contains mucous.

I have made an appointment with our GP to discuss this but I’m just interested to hear about the experience of others - whether your little ones had similar symptoms and eventually settled on their own or whether they were diagnosed with silent reflux or mild CMPA and if so what made a difference for them.

Thank you if anyone made it this far!

Sounds like my reflux and CMPA baby. If breastfeeding, just cut out all dairy (and I do mean all of it, you can't even fry anything in butter etc as dairy builds in their system and stays for weeks). If formula, then you need to try special formula. There are some very helpful Facebook groups. Not all dairy allergy formula is equal so you'll need to try a few. The less dairy they have, the nastier they taste.

Ah bless her heart. I’m sorry but it sounds like textbook CMPA.

If you’re BF, no need to wait for GP, stop eating dairy and see what happens. I did and had a different baby within 3 days.

Thanks for your replies ladies, we have an appointment tomorrow with the GP so will request a trial on a specialist formula and hopefully that might settle her a little.

Hi there - do you have an update on this at all? I’m in a very similar situation to what you described, with my 4 week old baby. The only difference is instead of lots of soiled nappies, my baby is very constipated. But the rest of the symptoms match your description.
Grateful if you have any update.
Thanks very much!

My little boy has exactly everything you describe, although doesn’t poo quite as much as your LO, but everything is a match.
I wondered if you could update how you got on with the GP and if you switched formula?

Bless him, it’s awful seeing them so uncomfortable isn’t it? We went to the GP and were prescribed infant gaviscon which has worked really well. It can constipate them but my little girl was having loads of loose nappies so it did seem to resolve this issue too. She was like a different baby within a week or so of starting it - hope you get sorted with your little one x

I’m so sorry, I’ve just seen this when I replied to the user who posted after you. Hope your baby is a little more settled now x
