Should you wake 1 month old to feed?

Hey guys, DS2 is a month old and he’s gaining weight really well. He’s always been a good sleeper at night especially, he used to wake up for feeds after 2.5-3 hours at the start and since the last week or so, he’s been sleeping for longer at night. He woke up to feed after 4.5 hours the last few days, 2 days ago I actually woke him up myself because I was worried. Last night he slept for 6 hours straight before waking at 3am to feed. He went back to sleep straight after he burped, then woke up 3 hours later and then another 3 hours later. Is it normal for them to sleep for 5-6 hours straight when they’re so little? Should I be waking him up for feeds, or should I let him sleep? This is my second baby but I’m really confused because DS1 wasn’t such a great sleeper.

Hi,

If your baby is gaining weight fine and they are happy in themselves, I would not wake them up. They may just be going through a growth spurt and need a little more sleep, or you may be one of the lucky ones that have a bf baby who sleeps long stretches. Believe me, if they are hungry - they will wake.

If weight gain is good, and plenty of wet nappies I’d probably not wake them. I don’t think I’d leave it longer than five/six hours though at that age. Enjoy!

I breastfed both of mine and the only time I've ever woken them up is because their weight gain was slow (only happened with one of them). As soon as it picked up, I let them sleep as long as they liked and just fed on demand outside of that. If your baby is gaining weight well and having the appropriate amount of wet and dirty nappies, I'd enjoy the rest!

Yep enjoy the long stretches of sleep. Mine also did 5-6 hours at 1 month and then 7-8 hours at 8 weeks.

All went to hell at 9 weeks (it's apparently normal for them to sleep well at 1-2 months).

Didn't get a 3+ hour stretch of sleep again after that until 5.5 months.

I never woke my EBF babies for feeds. The first one never slept anyway but the second did 6-8 hour stretchs in the first few weeks and gained weight just fine.
