Toddler night terrors?

My DS is only 16 months old but I think he’s having night terrors; he wakes up screaming, thrashing and rolling around, can’t be consoled at all by us. I’ve noticed he will fall asleep again or a couple of times has seemed to startle himself, then will go back down after some milk. It always happens an hour or two after he’s gone to bed and always when he’s really tired or under the weather.

Do you think these sound like night terrors? I would have said they were but everything I read online seems to point to them being more common in other older children?

Yes it sounds like it. My son had night terrors a lot when he was a toddler, it was horrible to see. He never remembered the next morning though.

They have reduced as he got older, he is 6 now I can't remember the last time he had one, probably about a year ago and it was after a period of illness.

I think my 15 months old may be having them. They're earlier in the night and LO just can't be comforted, it's really distressing. Then after a few minutes, the crawling/tossing and turning and sobbing stops by itself and LO rolls over and sleeps.

My mum says I had bad night terrors as a toddler and I also know they run in families, so I'm assuming that's what is going on.

Yeah DS used to have night terrors at that age. As you say, he couldn't be consoled so we just had to sit with him until it stopped. He has nightmares too but they're different, with nightmares he can be woken up and consoled. With the night terrors he didn't really wake up during it and he wouldn't remember it the next day.
He's 5 now and only has the odd one every now and again.

Sounds like night terrors. My DD has them. Less frequently now she’s 4 but it used to be more common when she was younger. Usually when she’s gone to sleep really tired. We’d have to basically stop her hurting herself as she was fully mobile stumbling about. The worst thing is her eyes are open, she’s really crying and calling for me but can’t seem to see me. They’d last 5-10mins but would feel like ages. I’d say her name a lot so when she finally snapped out of it she would be able to have a cuddle and calm down.
