What age did your LOs drop nap

Just curious at what age your little ones dropped their nap.. my little one is 2 next month. We recently transitioned to big boy bed as he was climbing out. it is a living nightmare. He's a very active boy and will not stay in that bed. Just constantly in and out meaning he's not going down till like 10-10.30 averaging like 20-40 in and out no joke, probably more 😂 when he was in his cot he would lay down away and go to sleep so its quite a change. Would love some advice.. we have a toddler rail?

Naps in arvo hard for same reason he just doesn't seem tired, In and out. Last couple of nights he's eventually fell asleep with a lot convincing on our bed then we can transfer.

He was having bad sleep before the transition so really struggling to go down before 10 not happy in his cot trying to climb out. So I'm just thinking either regression or nap drop? But I do feel maybe too early. Interested to hear your thoughts

I dont have any advice, but I have a 21 month old and I could have wrote this post myself!

She is getting better with the bed but it's been about a month now. We are down from 3 hours to about half an hour, just repeatedly putting her back in bed every 5 minutes.

She won't nap at all in the bed. If we are out she will usually nap in her pram or the car, but some days she just doesn't nap at all. I am concerned it's too early to drop the nap but I can't force her to sleep!

Hope things get a bit easier for you soon.

My daughter dropped her nap at 2. It was only at this point did she start sleeping through reliably, which was LUXURY!! She was never bothered about getting out of bed though (she’s nearly 3 now).
Could you add in something to the bedtime routine to encourage him to stay lying in bed? We have a Tonie box, she chooses a Tonie every night, lies down and listens. She knows that if she faffs about for a while, we will turn the box off, and so she might toss and turn before falling asleep, but she doesn’t get out of bed. She loves her Tonies! Would something like that work?

I made a door for my lo’s bed because had the same problem. It was just a bit of material attached to Velcro and we’d only put it on at sleeptime, after stories etc. It worked really well, though it was very easy to take off if Dc wanted to, but for some reason once the ‘door’ was there the sleep went back to how it was in cot.

Just wondering why people are moving to a bed so soon? I thought cot was best until they can climb out?

Because they climb out. Lots of babies can climb out by 18 months. Mine is just turned 12 months and he's already trying. He can successfully climb our staircase hand rail so I reckon he will definitely climb out his cot by 18 months - 2.

Yep. I had absolutely no plans to move to a bed so soon, but she very nearly climbed out one night so we didn't have a choice.

My dcs dropped their nap at age 4 when they started school, so they had to. They probably would have been happy to continue if there were nap facilities there. Never had issues with them getting out of bed or sleeping through. They had cot beds from birth (converted from a cot to a bed around 13/16m) and didnt change to a single bed until age 6.

DD dropped hers at 2y3m on the dot. I'd read something that said that was the average age and jokingly said to DH that, knowing her, she'd refuse to nap on that day. Guess what happened? Put her in the cot, she looked me dead in the eye and said, "No. Nap." and that was that. We tried for a couple of days but she just lay there chatting to herself, so we gave up. She had maybe two or three grumpy-at-4pm days and then was fine.

DS dropped his at 1y8m. On the first day of the March 2020 lockdown. That was GREAT timing! I kept trying and trying to get him to sleep because if he didn't nap he was an absolute fucking nightmare by about 3pm. But if he did nap he was up until 10pm, so we couldn't win. Horrendous time, for so many reasons!

Both of mine stayed in their beds, though. Even if DS was up until 10pm, he was in his cot, singing. (They both slept in the cot until they were nearly 3!)

Dropped the nap just before 3. But I always cuddled to sleep or stayed in the room, so didn't have this back and forth to bed. I like to know he's fast asleep before I relax, even now he's 6!

My daughter dropped her nap at 3 and 1/2 months. She was at that stage where it was 50/50 on whether she’d fall asleep so we decided it wasn’t worth the hassle of trying everyday ans would rather give her a consistent and early bed time every night. It’s been 6 months now and although occasionally she’s getting better and managing her tiredness, it mostly creeps in around 3/4 for an hour

If the day allows we have ‘quiet time’ in the afternoon and watch tv in our bed with her, could you try this instead for a while and see if he then goes to bed better? I’d try a few days with no naps but 6pm bed times and see how you go, if sleep is still no better can you love his nap until a bit later in the day?

Thanks for everyone's advice I'd heard that it was between 3 and 5 but It does look like quite a few people have experienced the earlier end of even.beforr 3 which tbh I expected 😂 he's always been the one to drop his nap earlier than others so imagine now will be the same.

Last night was slightly more successful I sat at the exit of the cot till he was asleep which helped. I may get a stair gate for his room too. Def a wild phase though 😂

My DS fought naps and bedtime around 2yrs. I was ready to drop naps, but DH wanted to persist. Once we got through that tricky period, he went on to nap until around the time he turned 4 and went to bed fine.

Malvern517 · 18/08/2025 07:48

Mine was about 2.5 although he did stop naps at home before he stopped naps at nursery for some reason.

As soon as he stopped naps he slept straight through every night from about 730pm - 630am. He is 4 now and in the 2 years since he stopped naps he has never once woken up in the night. I suspect we’ve been very lucky with his sleeping.

kersh33 · 18/08/2025 08:22

I think it is incredibly variable. My daughter was almost 4 when she dropped her nap. But she is in France where it is very much expected that children nap until that age. Her school has a nap room and even some of the 4 year olds are still napping at school.
