Any older parents with little ones out there?

I'm 44 and husband 49. We have three children between us - 18, 15, 5. All planned (the 5 yo is his biologically). We also bedshare. Both work ft.
I would love to chat to anyone in a similar position as I know we are definitely not your typical set-up!
How is it for other peri mums with a little one, for example?
I have friends with children a similar age to the 5 yo, but all considerably younger parents! x

I wouldn’t even class you as an older parent! It sounds like the youngest is not yours but your husband’s, so you had your kids when you were 26 and 29 ish… that’s pretty young these days! I’m 47 with my youngest being 5, eldest is 10, which is definitely on the older side of being a mum, but I don’t think I’m too unusual. I’m in peri menopause but take HRT and am generally very happy and stable. We both work pretty much full time but are able to work our jobs around each other so we’re lucky in that we don’t need childcare. Our youngest often ends up in our bed too, but I kinda cherish it as I know it won’t last for ever! You’re not older parents at all.

I'm 47 with a 4 year old and a 10 year old. "Waves*

Pluffing · 17/08/2025 15:49

Is having a baby at 39 all that unusual? It's perhaps 5 years later than average around here but certainly not noteworthy.

I’m 45 with a 4-yr-old and a 2-yr-old.

I don’t think we’re so rare!

everychildmatters · 17/08/2025 16:47

@Pluffing How old are you and your little one(s)?

everychildmatters · 17/08/2025 16:48

@CeciliaMars All three are mine! I had them at 26, 29 and 39.

You sound like a younger parent to me! I’m 54 with a 17yr old and a 9yr old.

Latenightreader · 17/08/2025 16:51

46 with a 6YO. I have noticed a bit of brain fog and pmt has got much worse in the last 6-12 months. Apart from that, all good!

everychildmatters · 17/08/2025 17:24

Reassuring to know we're not that old to have a little one! Just relieved she is definitely the last!! 😆

38 with a 9 month old here, and wanting (hoping) for another as soon as it is possible.

BurningBenches · 17/08/2025 18:00

I’m 46 with a 25, 15, 14, 6 and 4yo.

I was about a month off my 42nd birthday when my youngest arrived.

watersoul · 17/08/2025 18:09

Fifty with an 8 year old. Today is one of those days. So tired and menopausal, we’ve been out to the park and played games and I still feel bad that I don’t have more energy for her.

Espressoicecream · 17/08/2025 18:11

I'm 44 with a nearly 3 year old 😅
I have a handful of friends with toddlers in their 40s.
Most doctors and nurses ask if I had IVF 😆

BunniB · 17/08/2025 18:21

48 with a 6 yo. I look young for my age and try to keep fit - swimming, mountain biking, yoga and I also do brisk walking 4 x a week. Just adding strength/lifting exercises as I realise that’s an area I could improve.

DH and I work ft and ds was conceived easily and naturally, it was a textbook simple pregnancy. I realise how fortunate I am.

We also have a teen, and that can bring rewards as well as challenges! But at least when the teen leaves me, I’ll still have ds to look after so my neat won’t be empty too soon.

TwinklyTraybake · 17/08/2025 18:21

48 with an 11 and 6 year old. Felt much more tired when dd6 was a baby compared to ds11 even though she was a much easier baby. Peri menopausal now and absolutely shattered after 2 weeks off work with them!

Apollonia1 · 17/08/2025 18:38

53 with 5-year old twins. I’m a single parent and work full-time in a senior stressful role.
Life is very busy with no time for me!

Eagle1818 · 17/08/2025 18:44

I’m 48 with a 4 year old and DH is 53. A lot of people assume we’re younger I guess in part because we have a young child.

I know a lot of people in their 40’s with pre-school age DC.

I love life as an older parent. While it can be tiring there are other significant benefits not least financial which make life much easier. We paid our mortgage off before having DC and both of us have the highest salaries and most flexibility we’ve ever had in our careers which make the logistics of looking after a child much easier.

everychildmatters · 17/08/2025 18:45

@Apollonia1 That can't be at all easy. Did you conceive naturally? All credit to you for managing to juggle it all ❤️

everychildmatters · 17/08/2025 18:47

@Eagle1818 I was finacially far better off in my 20s with the first two than we are now so that isn't an advantage unfortunately!
And certainly far more tired but that is of course to be expected.

Im 46 with a 4 year old. I take hrt but really struggle sometimes with sleep and the dreaded 4am wake up. I expected the kid to be waking me, not my hormones. I do have energy for him.but I do think it would have been easier 10 years ago!

Gausodelou · 17/08/2025 19:58

I'm 46 with dcs aged 25, 7 and 3, all conceived naturally. . No sign of peri as yet. Plenty of energy to run around after the 3yo, which is just as well as I'm a sahm. I'm slightly at the older end of average compared to parents of my younger 2 dc's schoolfriends - we're in north London so there are plenty of older parents.

That’s young to me! I had mine at 36, 38 and 42, and still don’t feel outside the norm…

Motherofalittledragon · 17/08/2025 20:28

I’m 45, mine are 16,13,11,6,2.

everychildmatters · 17/08/2025 20:32

Those of you with multiple little ones who work and keep a beautiful/tidy/clean house...I salute you and no idea how you do it all!! I struggle to find the hours in the day!
