I’ve a 18weeks old baby who is constantly unhappy , he cry’s all day every day if he’s awake he’s crying.
he has reflux that’s being treated by infant gaviscon and it’s resolved all the reflux symptoms so it’s not that.
hes my second baby I’ve a 2 year old also who was such a happy baby ../
getting it very hard to cope atm:
does anyone have any advice please ?

The medicine seems to be helping a bit (on day 6 now ) but being sick on we’re off the gaviscon. Poop has become explosive to say the least 🫣 and still shiny mucusy with dark brown bits … dr tested the poop for virus’s and bacteria all was clear , is it a side effect of the medication?

Gaviscon (and even omeprazole) just make the stomach contents less acidic so that the reflux is less irritating. It doesnt actually stop the reflux itself. The only thing that does that is the natural strengthening of the muscle at the top of the stomach over time. So it could still be the reflux. Keep doing all the other things you do to help with reflux e.g. small and frequent feeds (particularly with bottle feeding), keep them upright as much as possible, consider a dummy (swallowing saliva can soothe the irritation a little)

@graceinc22 what other symptoms did your lo have??

the omprezol hasn’t seemed to help

what I have observed is lo had Covid and was on calpol for 3 days for a temp and was so settled and then again today I gave nurofen thinking he had teething pain and he’s been on the play mat a hour!! This baby wouldn’t stay on it 5 minutes usually..
dr appointment in 10 days I think we’ll try get it sooner

anyone just stop omprezol? I don’t think it’s working at all but am afraid to stop without dr saying

What dose of omperazole are you on? It was only when my daughter got to the maximum dose that we noticed a difference

Mummy2925 · 18/09/2025 19:01

@Superscientist 2mg 4ml

Yeah I agree with pp sounds like CMPA. My youngest has it along with a host of other allergies. Uncontrollable crying, rashes and lots of loose nappies as a newborn . Breastfed I had to cut out dairy and soya from diet but my goodness in 6 weeks she was a happy smily baby. I was fobbed off by health visitors and hospital too but GP immediately spotted the signs.
id switch baby to a dairy free formula (you can get these on prescription if you talk to GP) and give it a try for at least 4-6 weeks as it will take time for the symptoms to subside. It’s absolutely worth a try ! Then if it’s not that go back to GP for advice

What were the signs?

That's a starter dose, it's not unusual to find it doesn't make much of a difference and will need it increasing. The dose of omperazole can go from 0.7 mg of omperazole per kilo of weight of baby all the way up to 3 mg. Say you have a 5kg baby this would mean the right dose is anywhere between 3.5mg and 15mg!

Very mucusy explosive poos every time. Once with blood. And often seemed to have pain / discomfort in his gut. And bad reflux which to be fair the omeprazole did massively help with.

Mummy2925 · 25/11/2025 19:22

Now 8 months in , mucus poops stopped since weaning , crying still constant, rang HV at 5 months to be told some baby’s just cry … at breaking point … another dr appointment with another doctor next week

Sounds like CMPA ...both my grandchildren have it.
Took 18 weeks and visit to paediatrician to diagnose.
First was bottle fed and had to take half crushed Omperzole first feed of day.
Second baby was breastfed and his mum went vegan to ease the symptoms.
Be firm and persistent .
