Daughter dry in day but REFUSES to wee in nappy at night! Help please!

My nearly 2 and a half year old daughter has been completely dry now for 3 weeks during the day and, as all the books suggest, I am putting her in a pull up nappy for her sleeps. However, she point blank refuses to go in her nappy overnight and instead screams for me to go and put her on the toilet/potty several times a night. I have told her she must use her nappy at night time but she gets really distressed "noooooooooo, can't go in nappy, need toilet!!!" etc. etc. Obviously this is understandable as I'm telling her not to go in her pants during the day but I just don't know how to get round it.

I have put a potty right next to her bed and have even installed a night light so she can see what she's doing but she absolutely refuses to get out of bed on her own and instead screams for me. I have tried lifting her before I go to bed at around 11pm but this just results in her waking up and she never seems to want to go then anyway. The only liquid that she gets within an hour of going down is her milk (probably about 6oz). Should I just explain to her that she must either go in her nappy or get herself out of bed and use the potty on her own and then let her scream it out when I don't go to her? (Seems so mean ) I just don't know what to do but I'm having serious trouble functioning on the 3 or so hours of sleep that I'm getting at the moment - I feel threadbare! Please HELP!!!!

Hi Jerry, I think it is safe to assume she is not likely to actually wee in her night nappy, so just let her wear a panty at night too. Try to reduce fluids for hour or 2 before bedtime, and see if the frequency of needing to go at night doesn't drop quickly if you just relax about it all. Stop talking about it. Just take her to the loo when she calls, and try to get to sleep again asap.

Good luck!

i think milk takes longer to digest and come through than water, so maybe have the last drink as water and it will come through quicker and she will be able to wee at 11pm.

Unfortunately you can't have it both ways. She understands that wees go in the toilet, not nappies, so is confused that you expect her to wee in a nappy at night.

She will get used to using the potty at night. Just give it a bit of time.

She is very small, and has done really well to be toilet trained so quickly. You just have to grit your teeth and give lots of praise and encouragement.

It is tiring, but worth it - you will save a fortune on nappies.
