Toddler sick after restaurant dinner

Hey all!
We found out baby number 2 gender today so thought it would be nice to go for dinner. We tried a chain curry restaurant that had a children's menu. I got our 2 yo butter chicken which I made him last week and he ate so well and a lot tbh. Anyway he got out and was just instantly sick 😭 there was nothing wrong with the food boh me and his Dad are fine. I'm wondering if it was just a bit much or a bit rich?
He's been fine since but suffering with serious Mum guilt.. just think It was maybe too soon for curry out. This happened to anyone else

Sounds like he was just a bit of a piggy, gorged and then vommed it all up? I wouldn't stress about it.

It could be he ate too quickly or too much.
It could be that he’s not well and it’s a coincidence that he had also been out for a meal.
It could be that he has an allergy to something that was in the food.

Thank you.. just suddenly got hit with thoughts of it being completely irresponsible to take a toddler for curry (mum guilt) but I do think he just ate too much or was a bit rich maybe. He's absolutely fine now. No more sick and asked for more food when we got home

Restaurant and takeaway curry is a lot richer than jars or homemade versions so it was probably that.

Unless you ate the same exact food from the same plate, you don’t really have any evidence against food poisoning.

it could also be a virus or just something completely random.

unless it happens again, I wouldn’t worry.

I had that sort of reaction for years throughout childhood. My parents never seemed to notice that it was a pattern as they were a bit neglectful, despite it happening often enough for me to develop some strong negative associations. I mostly avoided those foods when I could. It wasn’t until later adulthood that I started having anaphylactic reactions to the ingredients that were heavy in those dishes.

That scenario is extremely unlikely, but if it happens again, watch for a pattern. If it keeps happening with even seemingly random food, figure out the common denominator.

He probably just ate too much too quickly. Obviously there are millions of 2 year olds who eat curry and rice daily. My then 2 year old was sick all over her room after Christmas dinner. It was just too much food and then too much chocolate on top of that. It happens. Sounds like he’s feeling better now.

As pp said keep an eye out for allergies - by random coincidence we were out for a curry this week with my son, who has a nut allergy and butter chicken was off the menu as their version contains cashew paste. Vomiting after nuts (but fairly immediately) was what originally alerted us to his allergy).

Zippidydoodah · 10/08/2025 09:04

Yes, nuts is what I thought. Just keep it in mind so you can spot patterns if they occur! I will agree that a restaurant butter chicken will be much richer than homemade, though.

Don't feel guilty you didn't do anything wrong. Toddlers can eat butter chicken. I wonder if he just ate a bit too much
