First bra for DD

DD(10) has been wearing crop top vests under her tops for a couple of years now.

She recently started her period and her body is changing fast. I think it’s time she moves on to a more supportive bra but I’m not sure where to start as she’s inevitably going to continue developing at pace over the next few years (I am quite large chested and was wearing bras in primary school so I assume she’ll be like me).

Where should we start?

I’d go with a sports bra or bralette. Most girls these days seem to favour comfort and don’t wear traditional bras - DD is 20 and doesn’t own one, nor do most of her peers.

Go to M&S for a first bra fitting. They have a range of soft comfy first bras and are helpful.

Is a bralette just like a crop top vest? She has a few of these and sports crop tops but there’s little support and it’s hard to get the right size.

I’ve thought about a fitting but If the last few months are anything to go by she’ll have grown out of whatever they fit her in within weeks 🙈

Wondering if there’s something that is more supportive than children’s crop tops but more flexible than a fitted bra 🤔

We did marks and Spencer’s first bra fitting but the bras didn’t last well and then sizing seemed odd for her (massive band size otherwise it dug in). I measured her myself and went to Primark and they do a non wired bra which she finds comfortable. Cheap too. She wears a Nike sports bra for sports and has a couple of m and s women’s crop tops for lounging x

Thank you - we aren’t near a Primark (or any shops that offer the same 🙈) but I can measure her and see what it comes up with

Measure her and use Vinted?

thismummydrinksgin · 08/08/2025 23:02

It’s a bit of a minefield I think. I’d try ordering off Asda or matalan. They will all do a version of the non wired bras.

When my daughter was a similar age I took her to M&S and tried on a few designs. This Sports bra was the most comfortable and she wore this design for a couple of years.

Then went back again and tried a few on with underwire but they were not so comfortable so ended up with this one.

She is happy with it and is more supportive and nice and soft and comfortable.
I didn't bother to measure her we just tried them on, have the hook on the largest setting and see what felt and looked right. In my experience the measurements are not always accurate depending on the style of bra. When the time comes for the next one I'll take her to Bravissimo to make sure she gets the right fit as I have found them brilliant.

DD (13) wears soft sports bras from Sports Direct. I think they are Puma.

menopausalmare · 10/08/2025 18:31

I measured my daughter myself and she tried a few on at M&S. They have teen bras which are plain but nice, especially under a school blouse.

Blueuggboots · 10/08/2025 18:32

Do NOT use M&S, they are beyond shit at measuring accurately.

Juliajojo · 10/08/2025 23:15

My DD will be 10 in a few months, when she started developing boobs I bought her some first bras from Matalan, I think they were £3 each as I did not want to spend alot if she was going to grow out of them quickly. She tried some different sizes in the changing rooms.
Over the course of the year on and off she has had boob growth spurts. I don't know if it is because she is close to starting her first period, she is now growing again but alot quicker. Primark has been the go to place to buy her bras.

Picklechicken · 10/08/2025 23:24

I would ask her if she actually wants a bra. Be led by her. Lots of younger girls and women are just shunning bras completely now and opting for crop tops and soft bralettes even when they’re a larger size. My dd is 21 and none of her friends seem to even own a proper bra….! (We’ve talked about it a few times, different generations etc).

Go to M&S for a first bra fitting. They have a range of soft comfy first bras and are helpful.

Go literally anywhere else than M&S. They don’t measure properly and it means your DD will be in a bra that doesn’t support her properly.

CorvusPurpureus · 10/08/2025 23:44

Sports bras/crop tops are fine. Mine are from various supermarkets & Primark. My 17 & 19yo dds also live in them!

I do own a couple of vavavoom underwired bras for if I'm getting dolled up, as does dd2 (dd1 would rather die), but a 10yo doesn't need anything like that.

Agree hard no to M&S. I wouldn't buy undies there anyway, because they're prone to catering to male fetishism, but also they are really shit at measuring.

If you do want to buy her a few bras that look more 'bra like', then I'd measure her (lots of advice online) & then buy cheaply from Matalan etc as suggested by pp.
