Parenting and AI

A friend just told me they were wary of uploading their kids’ pictures to AI for fun. Isn’t it safe? I get the worry about posting to social media and kids using AI without guidance themselves, but I suppose I don’t know much about it. He says AI sites use what you upload to train itself but what’s the problem with that? Could the pictures get into the wrong hands? Genuinely curious where others stand on this stuff.

I don't know what the risks are but my inclination is to avoid putting my daughters photo anywhere unnecessary and I'm not sure of what circumstances I'd need to put her photo into AI and would think very carefully about the benefits of I did think it would be useful. The risks might not become apparent until some poor child's images have been used in a way that can't then be undone.

I don't know how dangerous it is or how likely it is the picture itself will get into the wrong hands but here are some thoughts I personally have on it.

I don't trust any company to keep my data to themselves. Even if they are not selling it themselves very few companies have the ability to guaranteed your data safe from hackers. So i don't post or give anything I don't mind strangers having.

Whatever it is people, lots of people, will find a way to turn it into porn. Same for AI. Every picture you upload will help the AI learn to create people, and children. And you pictures will be one of billions but it will still be part of it. And somewhere someone is going to use that AI to make the most disgusting porn they can think of.

And for me most importantly. You and I might not mind this, but a child is their own person and should get the opportunity to consent to this or not. And once something is online you can't undo it. So I try not to have pictures of my child online for this reason. Once they are 16 they can decide for themselves what they are okay with and what not.

I don't judge people who use or post pictures of their children online. Everyone should navigate the online space as they see safe and appropriate. This is just my personal feelings about it.

Yes, they could get into the wrong hands. I’d never put anything personal into an AI tool. Your friend is right in that it uses what’s input into it to train itself.

Workplaces often have policies about AI use. Because something confidential could end up out in the wild. All it takes is a data breach.

I’m also very anti putting my kids’ images anywhere they don’t need to be for all the reasons PP state. They are not on any social
media and I would be annoyed if a company or someone uploaded their pictures to socials or fed them to AI without consulting me or their dad. My sister in law works in tech and her take on this is ‘don’t.’

The AI might be able to use them for deepfakes?

Once you put something on the internet it’s there forever, even if you delete it. I’d work on the same assumption about anything you put into the AI.

Isitreallysohard · 08/08/2025 08:43

AI is so new, I don't know why you'd want to do that. It's like when Facebook started and I remember the thing was "if its free, then you're the thing for sale". I agree with PP, everything is about data, so the less you give about your kids, the better.

Of course it's not safe

Where have you been???

StrawberryFreckles · 17/10/2025 14:14

Of course they can get into the wrong hands. It’s the internet! Maybe you should look on your local council or library website for A
a course about internet safety. When you have children it’s necessary to keep up to date with technology.
