I thought clothes sizes were for average baby?

My DD is just above 50th centile and weighs 8.9kg and just turned 9 months. 50th centile being average.

However all the baby sizes (Next , George etc), 9-12 age clothes start from 9.5kg.

For her to fit into those, she’d have to be above 75th centile?

I wouldn't worry about it, sizing for baby clothes is massively inconsistent anyway (like all clothes tbh). Just put her in the stuff that actually fits, regardless of what the label says!

She still fits into her 6-9 clothing. Not sure when to switch?

Also though, the clothes are for age 9-12 months. 9.5kg isn't the 75th centile for 10, 11, and 12 month old babies! Its just a rough guide.

When she doesn't fit into them anymore. You don't have to move up a size because she's reached that age, just do what you'd do with your own clothes, if they don't fit, get bigger ones.

My DD is 9m too and comfortably in her 6-9 clothes at 7.84kgs. The percentile means 50% of babies are the same size at that age, it doesn’t really have any bearing on clothes sizes.

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 07/08/2025 16:36

I don't switch in one go. I buy the next size up and she carries on wearing what fits her in other sizes.

She's 20 months and wears 12/18 and 18/24m. Occasionally 9-12 still fits. She's 50th weight and 9th height.

Lafufufu · 07/08/2025 16:38

Honestly my 75th centile baby wore 3-6m for approx 2 weeks 😅 baby sizes are a bit hit and miss

When it doubt size up especially vests... it avoids poo splosions

Iammeltin · 07/08/2025 16:44

Okay sorry for the obvious answers 😆

My first DS was 100th centile so he grew out of clothes sizes relatively quickly.

My now DD took 4 weeks to get back up her birth weight so if it wasn’t for that factor, she probably would have been at the correct weight.

i only buy clothes from Next. They always look massive!

I found 3-6 months, he outgrew in like 2 weeks. 6-9 months, he outgrew by 9 months indeed. But the 9-12 months were quite roomy for a while, it's not so much about weight, but also height.

John Lewis and Next run super super small, he outgrew everything from there in a flash. He's always been 40-50th centile for weight and height.

Btowngirl · 07/08/2025 16:55

We usually buy M&S in the next size to bridge the gap between sizes as they come up small for the size but bigger than the previous size if that makes sense.

Do boys clothes run differently to girls?
the Girls sizes look so big and she’s 50th centile but closed to 75th. She’s actually “70th” centile

According to ChatGPT

A baby is likely to reach 9.5kg around 10-12 months old, though this can vary based on individual growth and gender. At 10 months, the 50th percentile weight for boys is around 9.7 kg and for girls, it's around 8.8 kg, according to Healthline. By 12 months, the 50th percentile weight for boys is around 10.3 kg and for girls, it's around 9.5 kg

so she would be 9.5kg at 12 months??

So why do the 9-12 clothes start from 9.5kg?
majorly confused

You're taking this way too seriously. Babies are different sizes and shapes, regardless of weight. Things will fit when they fit. It's all fine.

Why would you waste resources asking ChatGPT what size clothes your baby needs to wear? I'm so confused by this whole post. If her current clothes fit then she wears them until they don't fit. It's really not that deep!

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 07/08/2025 17:33

Clothing including children's depends on the shop it's not a big deal. DS when born was just about on the centile. He's 18 now and I was hanging a wash out yesterday and noticed he's still wearing age 11/12 shorts 😂. I honestly had no clue since he buys his own now.

margegunderson · 07/08/2025 18:00

Mine were much lower centiles than yours and some baby clothes are just enormous. It was a big day when my DD grew into Mothercare 0-3m vests at a year old. Go by the size not the label

Iammeltin · 07/08/2025 18:00

How would I know they don’t fit anymore?
she’s tallish but skinny?
Sorry I sound dumb, it’s just my son was chubby and everything was tight around him.
This isn’t the case here so never know when to size up as she’s skinny so never fills the clothes…

cheesycheesy · 07/08/2025 18:04

Ah yes ChatGPT the fountain of knowledge. My 10 month old still fits into 6-9 months. He’s on 50th centile

wishIwasonholiday10 · 07/08/2025 18:06

For footed things it’s easy, they are too small when the feet get tight even if it’s loose elsewhere. For everything else just whenever it seems tight or too short.

What fits also depends on your child’s build. My daughter is tall and slim and usually grows out of things by length first. Brands vary a lot by how they fit and even within the same brand it can vary by item.

I had long slim babies.

Vest don’t fit when they stop buttoning at the crotch.

Babygrows don’t fit when they are either too short on the arms or the baby’s legs are too long (they can’t stretch out fully)

Tops don’t fit when their either are too short at the wrists or too short at the tummy.

Skirts or trousers will obviously be too short.

Stop worrying about centiles - just look at the child! 😆

They don't fit any more when they are too small in any dimension, sorry if thats obvious but what other answer could there be?

Squishymallows · 07/08/2025 18:27

You just put your children in clothes that fit. My two year old daughter has only just outgrown some things that are 9-12 months. She’s 18-24 months in leggings and tops. Most dresses she’s now finally grown into age 2.
It just depends. You have to put the clothes on the kid to see how they fit
