BLW (ish) foods for 6-7mo when on holiday?

Anxious FTM, LO will be turning 6mo this month. Am reading Charlotte Sterling-Reed's book and thinking to do a mix of baby led weaning and purees.

Plan to start solids when we come back from a 5 day trip abroad - LO will be 6 months 1 week so will see if we can hold out until then, on other mums' advice.

We have two UK weddings in September that we'll be away from home for for at least two nights - one we'll go down Friday pm, wedding Saturday and stay over, then back Sunday pm. The next week we're on the south coast Thursday-Sunday.

I know the suggested meal plan is just for guidance but does anyone have suggestions of things to feed LO while we're away? I was thinking avocado, banana are easy to mash up, plain yoghurt, you can get those hard boiled eggs in some supermarkets. No idea what stage he'll be at by the time we're there! And likely overthinking everything.

Edit: forgot to say I'm really keen to avoid pouches and jars.

Perhaps too simple of an answer but my daughter is 15 months now and we really just did whatever we were eating. They really don’t need any special fancy foods, you can prepare pretty much anything safely for whatever age they are at. I wouldn’t stress or worry about finding specific random foods, if you’ll be eating 3 meals a day just share :) x

We did baby led weaning and some purées but to be honest she never liked them much and preferred proper food. We started with just one meal a day so breakfast and then gradually added in dinner then lunch last and it worked for us so might be the case your just one one meal at this stage and it’s easier to plan

I'd just chuck a bit of whatever you're having in the hotels (?) at breakfast etc. Bits of fruit, fingers of bread and butter, cheese, banana. Yogurt, porridge whatever. Mashed potatoes, a finger piece of chicken.....At that age don't fret about 3 meals a day or what their intake is, they're still on lots of milk.

This, completely

By 7 mo mine still were just messing about with food - the main thing we took when out was a big wipe clean mat so we could return stuff that had been chucked on the floor back to the high chair!!!

Yes I agree with PP, at 7 months my LO was still just tasting foods so hopefully yours can try little bits of whatever you're having. Get the solid starts app which will tell you how to serve everything :)

ridl14 · 03/08/2025 21:11

Thanks everyone! So you'd say not to worry too much about foods cooked with salt/sugar eg mashed potato, porridge...?

It's serving safely that worries me as well but I do have the solid starts app.

Breakfast is definitely a good call. I got in my head about keeping meal timings fairly consistent as well.

That's great advice! Thank you.

Yes so hopefully whatever we put in front of him he's still being "exposed" to food but also probably doesn't matter too much how it's been cooked etc if he's mainly chucking it on the floor?

At 7 months, mine was on meals a day reliably, and we were introducing a second one. If no allergies, you can give them what you're having. For one or 2 days worth, you can use a pouch, it won't do harm.

We discovered dairy and egg allergies when we weaned so we can never give him anything when we are out and about and it's a real pain.....he otherwise very much eats real food and at 7 months we had graduated from purees to chopped up stuff.

This.

Pack a couple of apron style bibs and bowl or plate that sticks to the table / high chair tray. And some Tupperware

Niallig32839 · 03/08/2025 23:17

To start with meal times seemed to take ages and then the cleanup too so on holiday you probably won’t want that 3 times a day.

Btowngirl · 04/08/2025 09:53

We took DD1 on holiday when she was weaning and it was such a hack. Loads of stuff to try, all sat down together eating and no pressure as it’s not like we had slaved in the kitchen cooking. Just let them have a little try of things. DD2 is a complete foodie who has completely BLW and will manage to eat anything we give her.

Easier said than done, but try not to stress as you don’t even know how into food your baby will be yet! Remember ‘food for fun until they’re 1’ meaning, milk remains their main nutritional intake and food is a bonus.

ETA - I would probably steer clear of allergens whilst on holiday though!

We used jars and pouches as I didn’t want the mess of blw. Was very easy and they ended up liking anything we gave them. Grew up without any fussy food fads.

Seeline · 04/08/2025 10:00

Honestly for a couple of days, and the limited amount that will actually be eaten, a tiny bit of salt/sugar won't hurt.
There'll be bread/toast, some form of cereal/porridge/yoghurt, scrambled eggs, fruit, cheese etc for breakfast.
Lunch and dinner just a bit of what ever you're having.
I know you want to avoid pouches/jars but they are so handy for this sort of occasion if there is nothing that they can have. Don't need chilling until opened etc. I would always carry a couple just in case.

mindutopia · 04/08/2025 12:23

Honestly, just give them a bit of what you’re eating and keep up the milk feeds. We did one meal per month, so by next month would still be just offering only lunch. Or you could do breakfast if easier. Just give her a piece of toast and some banana. Job done. Then you don’t really need to offer anything else the rest of the day. Keep up milk feeds. They don’t eat much til 9/10/11 months anyway, so I wouldn’t stress about making anything special for a weekend away. Especially not at a wedding where you don’t want to make a big mess of things.
