Farley Rusks… how are they still being sold?

Everyone I know seems to turn their nose up at them and say they are full of sugar. But they are in every supermarket so who buys them? People must do otherwise they would lose their listing in the supermarket?

I was tempted to buy some as I did give them mixed with milk to my first child as a breakfast now and again. But I feel ashamed to buy this time for some reason.

My DH has them with butter spread thickly on them he loves them 😋

This. They are lush.

I never want to be the ‘plenty of us have had them and lived to tell the tale’ person, but to be fair they are definitely not in the same league as other treats out there. I’d probably change the age I’d give them to or only give them extremely sporadically to younger babies

I can't eat them since I had to stop eating gluten. I still scan the shelves to see if they do a gf version.

My dc's had them after sickness bugs when they were little as they are quite plain but nicely sweet. Nice for a boost if they'd been wiped out.

Allthesnowallthetime · 03/08/2025 13:59

Is this an advert for Farley's rusks?

I haven't had one in years but want one now ...

They are epic with blackberry jam on them.

One of my favourite snacks!

Tarkan · 03/08/2025 14:06

Another one who loved them for morning sickness. They’re also great if you have a throat infection and can’t swallow easily, mixed with hot milk to make them nice and smooth and squishy, makes a lovely change from always having porridge, especially since I don’t like squishy weetabix.

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 03/08/2025 14:08

I used to buy a box of the original ones for me and a box of the sugar free/less sugar ones for DC when they were toddlers. Delicious.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/08/2025 14:09

Oo I love them!

Iammeltin · 03/08/2025 15:08

Oh wow, I didn’t realise adults enjoyed them too!
I don’t get the appeal as an adult… I have an unopened box of reduced sugar ones as I wanted to give half a biscuit with milk as an alternative to my DC who is 9 months old and seems to be getting bored of weetabix and porridge (won’t touch finger food in the morning for some reason and has a small appetite in the morning too).

It’s never occurred to me to have one myself… rather have shortbread!

They're just high sugar, processed crap but i went through a stage as a teenager of having them with hot milk. Them and Crunchy Nut Cornflakes which are probably even worse.

Baby26 · 03/08/2025 17:23

Well there are many cereals on the shelves with too much sugar in, so rusks are no exception!
My son has never had rusks and he's 3. I did buy them once but he's so fussy that he wouldn't even try. I ate them myself😁

Notmyreality · 03/08/2025 17:24

Loved them with warm milk as a kid. Yum.

sanityisamyth · 03/08/2025 17:30

I was teethed on Bonios … I bought proper rusks for DS who seemed to enjoy them 🤷‍♀️

Chipotlego · 03/08/2025 17:32

Agree with others, they are so tasty! Realistically weaning babies and toddlers arent going to eat a whole one, they nibble, drop bits, lick other bits and generally make more mess than they ingest 😂

chattyness · 03/08/2025 17:34

Oo this takes me back! I used to love the banana rusks, they were delicious

Bobbieiris · 03/08/2025 17:34

They’re fine, I give them to my one year old twins now and again….everything In moderation!

sciaticafanatica · 03/08/2025 17:34

Rusks. Not tusks 🐘

@Mavvera Nah, Ready Brek's always tasted like wallpaper paste.

@sanityisamyth "I was teethed on Bonios..." 70s parenting?

I used to love Farley's Rusks dissolved in hot milk to make a thick paste. One of my DC was quite ill a few years ago and that was literally the only thing they could stomach.

Beamur · 03/08/2025 19:54

I loved these as a kid (and adult with butter on)
Never gave them to my DD.
I grew up eating a typical 70's mix of home cooked food and dazzlingly processed food.
Frankly - am a bit fat and have to take blood pressure meds so it has had consequences!

NotMyRealAccount · 03/08/2025 19:57

The joyful simplicity of a Farley's rusk soaked in warm milk was one of the few features of weaning that my mother and I agreed on. It never occurred to me to eat them as an adult but I recall them being a vehicle for butter when I was a child.

frecklejuice · 03/08/2025 20:00

God I love a rusk!

gohomeroger1 · 03/08/2025 20:11

They are my go to for getting something sugary into my kids after norivirus to give them some energy.
