hi fellow mums,

A friend recently returned from China and brought some meat snacks specially for toddlers. There were luncheon meat in different flavours, chicken meat, sausage meat etc. they came in air vacuumed packages and were quite handy when out and about and the little one needed a quick snack or something light to bite for lunch.

i wanted to look for something similar in the UK but couldn’t find anything which is pretty surprising.

Can any of the mums got any recommendations?

thanks in advance

I don’t think people on Mumsnet give their toddlers vacuum packed lunch meats. Grin 🥑
pepparami (it’s a bit of an animal) is the only one I can think of that doesn’t need refrigeration.

Otherwise, I know in Morrisons they sell what I would describe as snacking meats near the olives etc. spiced cheese and the like.

Jerky?

I'm not sure about the nutritional value of vacuum packed meat tbh. I think there are healthier snack options for your toddler.

Those disgusting fridge raider things are the closest I can think of.

Doesn’t sound very healthy 😬. Could probably stick some hot dogs in a zip lock bag as they don’t need to be refrigerated. You get bags of chicken bites/fridge raiders l etc that you can pop in a flask with some ice although probably fine out the fridge for a few hours. Lots of kids bring them on packed lunches to school. Those wrapped sausages in a tube with the orange plastic casing?

Dairylea lunchables? Not really the same but couldn’t think of much else, or attack a snacks, my kids are banned from eating fridge raiders as I can’t stand the smell.

BeatriceAndBeau · 03/08/2025 14:09

I would not be feeding a child that rubbish!

ISeeTrees · 03/08/2025 14:09

I've seen the vacuum packed meats in the Chinese supermarket near me but it doesn't look very appetising. Closest DD gets is an occasional pepperami!

Imicola · 03/08/2025 14:10

We bought some biltong at a market once and my DD loved it. I think a lot of what you'd get in the supermarket would be highly processed and probably not great, but you might find something line biltong or jerky if you are lucky. Or order online from a small producer.

Rozendantz · 03/08/2025 14:11

Biltong is what you're after I think. Dried meat in little packets (no fridge required), most supermarkets sell it now - it's delicious!

Imicola · 03/08/2025 14:12

Something like this, although it contains preservatives. https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/the-curators-the-original-beef-biltong-30g

we have fridge raiders, pepperami, sliced frankfurters, spam cut into cubes and corned beef cubes as meat snacks for our kids.

Research Biltong, they give it to babies for teething in Africa!?
I love the stuff for a high protein snack after a workout.
It is a potential choke hazard if you get tough stuff. You would probably best with the soft/wetter varieties.
