Kids characters - what age?

Humour me with this - I don’t necessarily believe there is a right or wrong here but it comes off the back of some strong opinions that a family member gave about our DC.

What ages/stages would you say it’s “normal” to like the following TV shows/movies/
characters:

  • Peter Rabbit (animated series on Netflix and movie)
  • Paddington (“The Adventures of…” animated series and the movies)
  • Bluey
  • Inside Out
  • Cars/Lightning McQueen
  • Roblox
  • Minecraft
  • Marvel films

First 5 anything from 2 upwards.
Marvel the same. They like them earlier along if they have an older sibling.

Roblox and Minecraft whenever you let them on it. My dc 6 lik w Minecraft because of the film but he's never seen the game so isn't overly invested.

PermanentTemporary · 31/07/2025 06:26

I don’t really know except for Peter Rabbit which I would say maybe from 2?

K0OLA1D · 31/07/2025 06:26

Some of them DS was watching at 2 or 3 but then he loved marvel and minecraft by 6 or 7

Well I can only go by what my child likes, no idea if he's 'normal'.

  • Peter Rabbit (animated series on Netflix and movie) - was his absolute favourite TV show aged about 2+, but will still watch it now sometimes at 6.
  • Paddington (“The Adventures of…” animated series and the movies) - we never watched this, but I would guess 3-4?
  • Bluey - has always watched it as it's on Cbeebies, but seems to get more from it now at 6 than he did when he was younger. Seems to be popular with all ages up to late primary.
  • Inside Out - haven't watched this
  • Cars/Lightning McQueen - brief intense love for this in pre-school, so 3-4 but probably appeals younger too
  • Roblox - doesn't play this or know anything about it
  • Minecraft - is currently obsessed (age 6) with the characters despite only having played it at a friend's house once. It's huge at school but most of the mums I talk to don't let their children play it yet. Some have seen the movie.
  • Marvel films - I feel like these should be a bit older, than can be quite scary and full on. Maybe 8+? But I'm sure children do watch them much younger.

I think when children have really loved a show they'll watch it for comfort for a long time after the age it's aimed at.

verycloakanddaggers · 31/07/2025 06:40

These characters vary - some start very young, some later. All can continue as long as a person enjoys them, into adulthood quite common in the case of Marvel. Inside Out is also widely enjoyed by adults.

Most kids return to childhood favourites sometimes, it's known to be emotionally healthy to do that.

tonyhawks23 · 31/07/2025 06:40

The marvel movies are like 12s so they are different to all the others but there are young versions like Spidey that's for younger kids.some of the marvel is too adult for kids.bluey works for adults too it's wonderful, and inside out which is brilliant, and minecraft of course,5 up for Minecraft imo.Peter rabbit and Paddington for littlest kids.

Stripeysockspots · 31/07/2025 06:41

Disney+ has Spidey and his amazing friends which includes all the marvel characters. But my ds mainly likes them from just seeing them and us explaining who they are. I think superheroes were a strong theme in the nursery dress up box too.

stayathomer · 31/07/2025 06:49

I think it totally depends on the child except for marvel movies, that depends on the household but eg with the first iron man I think parents should watch some of the heavier ones first.

CurlewKate · 31/07/2025 06:59

Marvel’s in a different category, isn’t it? Aren’t the films 13? I don’t throw about Minecraft and Roblox-they are after my time, but the others are all from when you start allowing TV until they don't want to watch them any more, surely? My DS went back to programmes for much younger children for comfort until he was quite old- I remember him watching In the Night Garden sometimes when he was 8ish?

Bitzee · 31/07/2025 07:03

Paddington, Bluey, Peter Rabbit, Cars - anything from 2 upwards, may start to outgrow it around 6 but still find old favourites comforting and not complain when a younger sibling is watching! My 8YO still happily watches Bluey even if she’d never put it on herself.

Inside Out is aimed at tweens really but would be fine for a younger kid to watch, under 6 and I reckon they might be bored though (my 4YO was).

Roblox I think is 13+ for full content isn’t it, but younger kids can play it with parental controls and for that maybe 7+ but personally I think it’s awful and don’t allow it.

6 for Minecraft if they’re into it and parental controls are set. Do that and it’s basically virtual lego and fine for any age that can manage the gameplay. My 4YO has seen and liked the movie but wouldn’t be able to figure out playing it.

Marvel roughly 8+ but depends on the child and if they scare easily. Unless you mean that Spidey cartoon on Disney which is fine even for preschoolers. The characters pop up in other places though like adidas sells spiderman shoes in preschool sizes and some of the marvel lego is 4+. So I think often younger kids know the characters even without seeing the films.

inasillyfrillydress · 31/07/2025 07:09

2yo - Peter Rabbit series watched, but definitely not the movie
2yo - Paddington series and 3yo the movies
2yo - Bluey

The minimum ages is the age recommended by BBFC, there is no maximum age (e.g. I'm in my 50s and still like to watch Hey Duggee). Common Sense Media is a US site that breaks doen the content more so you can judge for yourself, although since it's American it's far less worried about violence than I am and far more worried about swearing and romantic relationships. But since it breaks it all down in great detail you can still use it to decide if you are happpy for your child to watch it.

But I'm assuming this question is because someone is claiming your child is 'babyish' for still liking Peter Rabbit while their pre-secondary child is oh so grown up because they watch Marvel films? In which case ignore and stick to what you and your child are comfortable with. Some people seem think their child watching shows aimed at older children somehow makes their child more sophisticated. Spoiler: they're not. Not that Marvel help with all their merchandise aimed at young kids. Watch the stuff that is age appropriate but best to just say a breezy 'oh, we've not watched that one yet' without going into the details of why. Unless they are organising a sleepover and letting 8 year olds watch Deadpool and Wolverine in which case I'd make sure my child was otherwise occupied that day because they clearly are very lax in their parenting.

comfyshoes2022 · 31/07/2025 07:47

I use the Common Sense Media suggestions, which tend to recommend much older ages for many of these items.

Marvel films from around 6? Despite the fact that they are 12s? Or am I wrong about that?

Oh right yeah, well around then in that case! Might aren't old enough yet so I was just thinking about my friends children and how mature they seem.

They're mostly 12A

It very much depends on the child.

Actually-I don’t think it does depend on the child. No 6 year old should be watching 12s. 10 possibly, but not 6.

Thanks all for your replies 😊 @JaninaDuszejko hit the nail on the head. I’m getting comments from stepMIL that I’m “setting my son up for a load of bullying” when he goes to school as he’s not been introduced to certain things yet 🫠😂 Her comments are not something that bothers me at all - I was just interested to hear other people’s take on it 😊

4yo DS. Currently loving Peter Rabbit and Paddington because there’s lots of adventure and lots of mischief 🫠 which he finds hilarious. He really enjoys the movies too. He enjoys Inside Out - again, he finds the characters funny.

Went through a Cars/Bluey phase about 3. Would still happily watch them now if on but doesn’t ask for them.

Knows a few Marvel characters to see as we stayed at the Marvel hotel in Disneyland Paris this year. Has watched Spidey & Friends a few times and enjoyed it but isn’t really that fussed on superhero’s just now.

We didn’t really have screen time before he was about 3/3.5ish bar a few times we had sickness bugs and we were stuck on the couch for a couple of days. Not in a super strict way, it’s just not something he ever asked for or had an interest in and it was never on during the day in the house anyways so I just left it until he showed interest 🤷🏻‍♀️

StepMILs opinion is that hes being babied because he doesn’t have an iPad (apparently all children have these from around 2?! 🤯). I have one which he’s occasionally used to play games on if we’ve been on a flight or awake really early when camping but he’s never asked for it at other times! And he’ll be bullied at school for not knowing about Minecraft and Roblox and being into all the Marvel movies, as apparently that’s what he “should” be into at 4.5 🤔😂

Bitzee · 31/07/2025 09:14

That’s just downright bizarre, I thought you were going to say he was 8 or something! Is he the first little kid in the family for a while or something and she’s misremembering? Or just actually crackers?!

I have a 4YO and I know none that play roblox, minecraft or watch Marvel movies. There might be some awareness especially of Marvel and Minecraft because of all the merch and perhaps the Minecraft movie, especially if there are older siblings but that isn’t the same as actually watching marvel movies or playing the games themselves. Mine actually has a Minecraft backpack that he chose himself, he has seen the film and likes to offer feedback when older sibling is playing it on the Switch but there’s no way he could manage actually playing it himself. I also don’t know anyone that allows loads of ipad time at that age- likr you I’d view it primarily as a tool for travelling.

Stripeysockspots · 31/07/2025 09:22

We have just allowed my dc an iPad which is restricted to 20 mins a day IF all homework etc is done at age 10.

I think knowing about the characters is fine and they don't need the games to actually do this ime. You can buy a Minecraft Lego set for example if you're that worried. My dc have books about marvel so have learnt characters from those.

cardboard33 · 31/07/2025 09:23

My 6.5 year old boy likes Bluey (which I like too) and has recently got into Spidey and his amazing friends (which I dont like as much) but has never liked Paddington as he finds it too scary. He also liked Peter Rabbit a few years ago (4ish) but found it annoying. He's watched Inside Out once, and loves Frozen and Moana.

I agree that the Marvel/Minecraft etc franchises are too old even for my child and he's at least two years older. I hate the fact that he's getting to an age where most of the supermarket "cheap and cheerful" clothing is dark and related to gaming or the two franchises mentioned above, when he's rarely used a tablet, doesnt have access to a Playstation/Xbox and definitely doesnt need to be knowledgeable of any 12 rated films at the age of 6. I will refuse to buy him any clothing of that ilk (and let him watch it) until we believe he is old enough to understand it properly... which will hopefully be never given I hate those sort of things!

tonyhawks23 · 31/07/2025 10:39

Marvel movies definitely not for 6 year olds crikey!Spidey for 6 year olds but the cartoon not the actual marvel movies.
