Car seat airport transfer

Hi everyone

we have booked a mini van for a airport transfer to the airport and have been told a car seat isn’t required for my 18th month old - I know this true but I feel uncomfortable. However I’ve also read that in a specially designed taxi like the one we’ve hired there isn’t such a risk as in a car is that correct?

DH thinks I’m being ridiculous as ‘everyone else’ does it

I'd love to see your DR'S reasoning on why you're magically less likely to be in an awful car crash just because you're travelling to or from an airport. My child is rear facing until 5 as this is safest. No car seat at all is insanity.

*DH!

Well this is my thinking exactly - he says if the law doesn’t say it has to happen then clearly it’s safe. Unsure how he’s arrived at that conclusion.

Hiya,

we travel internationally with our now 2YO.

so you either need to drive your self to the airport with the car seat, or find a taxi company that has a car seat. They do exsist but they are expensive.

i wouldn’t drive to the airport without my child in a car seat. I wouldn’t them in a taxi without a car seat either despite what the law says.

can you drive there and park? I know it’s very expensive.
I also don’t think “everyone else does it” either

Or would the van hire company keep for car seat whilst you’re away? As in you put your car seat in the van, they keep the car seat and bring it to pick you up.

Hi thanks for the replies. I did look at that taxi company above but we go tomorrow 🤦🏻‍♀️ we have a lot of luggage so I’ve arranged for my Mum to take me and DS in her car and DH can go in the cab with the luggage. DH has now gone in a strop for me apparently being OTT

Can’t you cancel the taxi and all going the car?

Monket · 29/07/2025 21:27

Take the car seat with you and put it in as oversized luggage. Children under 2 usually have an allowance for a car seat and a buggy in the hold - check with your airline. Then use it on the other side too.

Shoemadlady · 29/07/2025 21:28

Look for a different transfer. Any company worth their salt will provide car seats. Check hoppa.com and google airport transfers on travelsupermarket.

Thanks I didn’t know that - I’m going to get my mum to drop us as I won’t need a car seat when I’m there the transfer company have arranged one and everything else we will be walking to ☺️

Well he will get over it, it will soon be forgotten when you’re away. Seems like a good option!

DiscoBeat · 29/07/2025 22:22

Take a car seat!

@FTMaz Why not just take your own? The car seats used by some transfer companies are shocking - minimally tested, not the correct seat for the age, stored incorrectly, out of date etc. Plus you have no idea of its history and if it’s been knocked around etc.

Completely agree with @dampsquib94 - rear facing is safest and I wouldn’t take DS is any car without his rear facing seat (he’ll be 5 in a few months and his rear facing seat will easily last him another couple of years! He’ll be in it until he outgrown it 👍🏻🤷🏻‍♀️)

If your car seat is portable ask if the taxi company can keep it for you while you are away (assuming you are being picked up again). Otherwise you need to take your own car. The law is only there to cover emergencies where is not practical to have a car seat with you eg getting home from A&E if you went there in an ambulance or getting home if you are stranded for some reason with no other option but a taxi.

sorry just saw this is an old thread

MrsKateColumbo · 11/01/2026 19:43

Will you not need a seat the other side?

Ime all airlines except vueling will let you bring a car seat for any age child for free.
