Peeing at night - 5 yo

Hi! Looking for advice? Our DD is 5 and we always take her out of bed for pee around 11pm.

If we don’t she will wet the bed. Any ideas on how to get round this? Can a 5 yo go from 8pm to 7am without a pee? Thanks!

She won’t be dry until she is producing a hormone that wakes her up when she needs a wee.

it’s not something you can teach. It will happen when she’s ready.

and that age is different for all children.

one of mine was 6.

One of my DC was still not dry at night at age 8. We saw the GP who basically fobbed us off and said some kids are late to develop and he'd refer us to the incontinence nurse but that the waiting list was long. So we bought an alarm online. I had them wear cotton underwear, to which the sensor was clipped, and then a pull up over the top. I was extremely skeptical but it worked after less than a week and they were dry at night ever since.

They can but they need to produce a hormone that actively reduces urine production at nighttime, this isn’t something that can be taught.
My 8 year-old had an accident last night around 1am. Very rare for her, I think it was a mixture of illness and exhaustion that she slept through.
It happens, as long as there’s no shame put on the child, just a “that’s okay darling, it’s just an accident”, they’ll eventually get better at going through the whole night dry.

Thanks for the feedback! No shame in an accident obviously and good to know it happens at this age.

My 5, nearly 6, year old is still in pull ups, while her 3 year old brother has been dry at night pretty much since he toilet trained. My sister wasn't dry until her teens, and I've heard stories of every age in between.

It's not even that uncommon. ~10-15% of all 5-6 year olds aren't dry at night. I figure it will happen when it happens, and there's little point stressing about it. The NHS won't intervene until 7-8 years old, so all I can do is try to reduce fluid intake in the few hours before bed, and look forward to the day I no longer need to purchase nappies.

Yep i guess pull ups might be an option as well. Never thought of that! At least we would know when she starts having dry nights.
