2 Year Olds Speech

Just looking for advice...

My LO is now 2 years & 3 months and seems to still struggle a little with speech. I raised it with our HV when he was about 18 months and we went to a group session for this and although he has developed new words I'm still concerned. He doesn't really use sentences and the list of words he knows/uses changes monthly rather than expands as such.

He often learns a new word, uses it in context for a few weeks then seems to suddenly forget the word and stops using it? The woman at the therapist group said its because he hasn't actually learnt the word properly yet but gut instinct tells me that's not true for my LO... My partner is ND and also struggles with dyslexia and I wonder if this I'd affecting my LO? I've read that toddlers and young children can struggle with memory and recalling words but I don't know if anyone else has had this experience?

My daughter struggled to retain words and until about 21 months only ever had a working vocabulary of 3 words. When she did start retaining words she jumped straight to 3 word sentences, for her this happened around 26-27 months. We had to make an effort to reinforce old words as well as the new words and had some exercises from the hv. She learnt mama/dada at 9 months I'm not sure when she dropped them but she was near 2 when she would use them routinely again!

My daughter has learnt everything from rolling to walking to talking by doing it a little but not doing it properly until she's ready and then away she goes doing it like she's never not been able to do it. She's just done the same with reading. Ages reading the lowest level of books having to be encouraged to sight read words we knew she knew but once she was comfortable she pretty much skipped two reading levels!

She started school at 4 and 3 weeks in September and is just finishing reception right on target! Neurodiversity occasionally has been brought up as she has a few communication issues around unfamiliar adults, she also has had developmental delays due to food allergies and reflux, but it's not something we currently are concerned about as being 4 is also an explanation for her issues.

@Superscientist Thank you for your reply. I have a gut feeling my LO may be similar. He has some words down to a fine art and others he's brilliant at using until he decides he doesn't want too. I'll keep waiting and seeing for now and speak to our HV again. I'm sure he'll get there in his own time just as your daughter has

We Saw speech and language with our daughter and they were amazing. It was such a joy to watch how they interacted with her and what they got out of her. I would definitely recommend self referring!
