Wiping their own bottom

How old were your kids when you could trust them to properly wipe their own bottom?
My dd is 4 years old and neither she nor any of her friends of a similar age can yet but I should start teaching her now shouldn't I? I have my Kando's ready.

(Sorry, what a question to ask )

my dd wiped herself when she went for a wee from about 3 and is 5 now and i still wipe when she poo's, i did try to teach her to wipe her bum after going for a poo but she never ever got it right so i gave up

Jo10Go · 25/05/2008 20:51

Well dd 1 who is 8 can be trusted but dd 2 who is just 5 still leaves a trail sometimes!
As for dd3 (2YRS) I ave no chance!

FrannyandZooey · 25/05/2008 20:52

ds is 5 and has just learnt
he seems to do quite a good job tbh, I don't think he would have done so a year ago when a lot of his friends learnt

I will 'check' they are clean (if they want me to) until they are 6, but they have been doing it themselves from 3-ish.

CrackerOfNuts · 25/05/2008 20:54

Ds (5.6) has just started wiping his bum himself, but only because I refused to do it anymore.

He would of still had me doing it at 16.

notnowbernard · 25/05/2008 20:54

wee - from start of training, really (about 2.5?)

poo - can't remember, but she's 4.5 now and manages really well

ILoveDolly · 25/05/2008 20:55

my over independant 2.6yo INSISTS on doing it "self mummy self". with no follow up wipe. stinky knickers. luckily that's only for wees!

pootlesmum · 25/05/2008 20:56

Thank you for your answers ladies. My mum said that she thought my dd should've been doing it for a while now but I did think she was wrong and also any rl mums I asked also said they'd expect their kids to do it from about 5years plus. I just wanted to check with you. Thanks

I'd say three if they are reasonably adept.

I have been worrying about this lately

DS almost 7 and has no concept of how to go about wiping himself. He isnt very good at hand eye coordination.

Im going to have to show him soon obviously but I know he is going to find it mega hard

cadelaide · 25/05/2008 21:06

Don't worry Yurtgirl, DS was the same.

He's nearly 9 and still occasionally has trouble. He has found all those kind of things hard; cutlery, handwriting etc.

How disloyal I feel typing this, he'd be mortified.

Yurtgirl · 25/05/2008 21:11

Thats reassuring Cadelaide - funnily enough ds struggles abit with cutlery too!

cadelaide · 25/05/2008 21:15

the problem for our little man is that he has a younger sister who is very good at all that stuff.

I think we were impatient with him when he was younger, now we know he genuinely finds those things difficult despite trying very hard.

Oh god, I'm starting to bore myself with my parental guilt.
